The Great Taos Bank Robbery and Other True Stories

A really fun accounting of stories from the New Mexico area
If you are expecting a fact-filled, dry, history book, full of details and dates that are boring, you are in for a surprise. This was a hilarious look at failed bank robberies, floods that never were and other stories about interesting characters from the New Mexico area. It includes photos of the areas where the events happened, or almost happened. I loved it. I can't believe that I put off reading it because it was a non-fiction book, and I expected it to be boring. Boy, was I wrong. It's a really fun book to read

Entertaining
Not a " Can't put it down " read, but very entertaining. You have to enjoy Hillerman's style for details of the Southwest because he does go on about the way the sun dances off of a cloud and such. But that's what I enjoy most about Hiller man. He doesn't always seem come to a climactic conclusion, but isn't that a lot like life..

One of my Favority Books
The Great Taos Bank Robbery is hilarious, worth the price of the book all by itself. Tony Hillerman goes on with other stories that are sometimes funny and sometimes thought-provoking. It's all about New Mexico, a state with a fascinating history.

Laugh out loud funny.
Tony Hillerman is a great chronicler of the New Mexico area, especially the Navaho. I first found his writings years ago in an audio tape of The Great Taso Bank Robbery. I laughed so hard that I had to keep rewinding to catch the parts I missed.Time has not diminished the charm of this book.I've now given away several copies. The latest to my sister-in-law and her husband who have just moved to the Santa Fe area. They have been just as charmed and amused as I was way back when.I thought the book had disappeared and was out of print, but this reissue by Hillerman's daughter is a real gift to the reading world. Highly recommended.

A winner!
I really enjoyed this book. It was put together very nicely, entertaining, easy-to-read, and every informative about the history and culture of New Mexico. If you live in the Southwest and want to understand your corner of the world, then reading this book would be a great starting point.

Is That It?
I was disappointed. If I had read this book before any of the Leaphorn/Chee mysteries, I don’t think I would have tried the mysteries. Luckily I read all of Tony Hillerman’s other books, and his daughter’s, first. Those I love!

Finding treats in the new bank vault!
I've been a fan of Tony Hillerman's books for many years and have put as many of his works as I could onto my iPod so I can enjoy them when I'm working in my pottery studio and not happy with what's on the radio. I've heard The Great Taos Bank Robbery and my other Hillermans many times over the past few years, along with my Jazz and some classical and rock masterpieces. I've heard Tony himself read this book, although I was so surprised to discover that this new edition has MANY "new" stories which were not on my iPod CD version. I've got a few other Hillermans read by Tony and I love them and have long forgiven him for his occasional "heliocopter" or other pronunciation glitch. I'm still trying to forgive him for abridging his own great works, though (that will take a bit longer). I bought my new copy because I wanted to enjoy what his daughter Anne and her husband added with their words and photos. Such a treat! I loved Anne's other book about her father's work, "Tony Hillerman's Landscape: On the Road with Chee and Leaphorn by Anne Hillerman (Oct 27, 2009)."You'll like this book with its new stories and I bet if you're a real Hillerman fan you'll pray like I do that somebody will release a CD version of George Guidall reading "A Thief of Time" COMPLETE and UNABRIDGED!!!!!!

A must-have book
A long time ago in a state far away I purchased a small book that told larger-than-life stories. I read "The Great Taos Bank Robbery," then read it again. Author Tony Hillerman became one of my heroes at that point, and he remains so to this day. In the intervening years I have returned to that dog-eared book more times than I can count, especially when writing my own newspaper, wire service or TV stories and wishing I were writing them where Tony Hillerman did: the Land of Enchantment - New Mexico. I collected First Edition copies of Tony Hillerman's books, but sadly, I never got to meet the man. I have met his vivacious daughter, Anne, however, and was delighted to learn that she and photographer-husband Don Strel were re-issuing "The Great Taos Bank Robbery" with added notes and pictures. The book came to my house yesterday, and I did not put it down until early this morning - once again held under the spell of Tony Hillerman's storytelling. Just in time, too, as my original copy was dropping its pages faster than I could tape them together. I cannot urge you strongly enough - buy this book if you love good writing, the West, and a bunch of characters who make up "The Land of Enchantment."Larry Roderick, "Chicago Tribune," (ret.)

Great insight.
As a devotee of Tony Hillerman' s stories and the introduction they have given my family to New Mexico and Arizona, it has been a great pleasure to read these long and short tales about the real characters and events recounted.
