Ending was missing something
The final two scenes didn't have the development I expected from John. I didn't feel drawn in. Critical points seemed too short.

A return to true fantasy
This novel is a great return to the series' original roots, going back to the setting of the second book. It's also a more true fantasy novel than most of the other books in Ranger's Apprentice, Brotherband, etc, as it has some magic. Overall, I'd really recommend it, especially for people who enjoy fantasy and historical fiction stories, or are fans of the Ranger's Apprentice series and others by this author.

Great
Love all the books by John Flanagan. lots of adventure, action and very good story telling. All three of his series are page turners.

Others in the series were better
This was a decent read, but not as good as the previous books. It felt more as if the author just needed another book churned out for the series. This one lacked the personality and charm of the characters.

well written
as a fan of the rangers apprentice series I loved this book! it didn't cover as much stuff or bring in some good characters. such as Halt or Horace. but it was a great read, and kept me on my toes.

Unsatisfying
Well written but kind of a simple plot. Several scenes were repeated and the same background information was provided several times. The cast of characters was thin. Almost all the old favourites were not in the story at all. I just read the author's latest Brotherband Chronicles book (#9) and got the same slightly worn, tired feeling. The problem with setting such a high standard in earlier books is that we have come to expect so much.

Great for 12yo
My extremely reluctant reader loves this series. He had to read #1 for English at school, and he’s been a keen reader (only of this series!) ever since. Even I enjoyed the story.

OMG!!!
Oh my gosh!!!! Such a crazy book! Loved it, read it in two days and was hooked the entire time. Felt though as if some of it was just repeating the burning bridge but that’s fine because I live all the Rangers books!!!
