Mighty Paw Smart Bell 2.0 Dog Door Bell for Potty Training Dogs & Puppies

I bought this 4 years ago and never gave a review, I recently had to purchase a replacement, only because I accidentally broke the button on my last one. We absolutely love this item. I have always found it annoying when a dog barks to go out. So we got this for our 4 month old Australian shepherd. It took 10 minutes to teach him the bell. Everytime he hits the bell, i open the door and give him praise. No treats, this bell was ONLY to get outside. 2 years later we adopted a 4 year old Aussie, she took a little longer to figure out the bell, I do think this is most effective when training puppies rather than adult dogs. After a few weeks, she eventually got it. I highly recommend this product, but definitely for puppies. My only complaint about the product, the sticky pad is permanent. It took the paint off the wall when I had to take it off. But, after 4 years, it was still firmly stuck to the wall, so I guess that's positive and a negative.

Love this product because it is/was easy to install and set up. We chose the two transmitters version so our dog can let us know when he wants to go out, and when he is ready to come inside. Additionally, training our dog to use Smart Bell has taken out the stress of worrying about our canine family member needing to go out to do his business, or simply wants to enjoy the backyard, or when he is ready to come back inside because he now communicates using this system. Installation: Smart Bell comes with everything needed to install and includes several 3M sticky pads for mounting the transmitters without drilling holes in the wall, etc. After a couple trial installations for the inside transmitter, we finally settled on attaching it to the inside glass of the door opposite the outside transmitter (see photo). WARNING: The sticky pads work very, very, well and the transmitter is not easily removed if you decide to move it. In our case, we tried two different locations on the drywalls and I used a putty knife with some effort to carefully pry it off without damage to the paint/wall. Training: Key to the training was to get our dog interested in the transmitter (button) to begin with, achieved by smearing a tiny bit of peanut butter on the button face. Because he was a puppy at the time, he was not pressing hard enough to actuate the bell when he licked at the peanut butter. That got him interested and what finally worked was to wipe a high-value treat across the face of the button, leaving its scent. He could smell the treat and began pressing with his nose and using his paw looking for the treat, activating the bell. As soon as the bell sounded, we opened the door, praised him, and offered him a treat outside the door to get him to go outside. We used the same method to get him to activate the bell to come in. Being highly "treat" motivated he quickly associated the bell with getting treats and we weaned him off as he soon understood the bell would get him out and in the door. We still give him a treat when he comes in as a reward for letting us know he is done outside and ready to come in. The Smart Bell is programmed with 38-different chimes and 4-differnt volume settings. Downside: There is no list and you must cycle through each chime to decide the one you want to use. BIGGER DOWNSIDE: If the home loses power, Smart Bell defaults to the first chime. It does not hold the choice in memory. Where we live, we have lost power often enough that we just use the default chime . . . Durability/Performance: Purchased and installed in November 2022, and as of this writing the outside transmitter exposed to all our weather, dirty/muddy paws and even a slight bit of biting for just over a year and works as designed every time. Recommendation: Highly recommend!

So it didn't take long for my 6 month old puppy to figure out that when she rung the bell I would open the door. The problem is that she believes she ALWAYS needs to be outside, so she is now 'constantly' ringing the bell and staring at me. Before we got this product she would just quietly wait by the back door, no whining or barking or scratching at the door, and if we were watching a movie or something we wouldn't know that she needed to go out and she'd just have an accident in the house. So now we at least have a way of her letting us know she 'needs' to go out, but now the downside is that I have to use my judgement as to if I think she actually needs to use the bathroom or if I think she just wants to go out for another playtime session because she's bored even though she was outside five minutes ago. I'm also giving this a four out of five stars for a only a couple of minor reasons. We've only had the product for a week or so at this point, so I can't say anything about the longevity of it, but it seems sturdy enough. The reason I'm not giving it 5 stars is because 1. There might be a lot of different tones and rings to choose from but they are all super annoying and/or too long. The one I have chosen right now is the one I've found to be the least annoying but it would have been nice to have something a little less obnoxious. 2. There's a big jump in the loudness levels. I believe you can set the ring at 5 different noise levels and right now I'm on a two and it's still pretty loud. However, I was BARELY able to hear it at a 1 level. So it would have been nice if there was like a 1.5 loudness level to set it on. But, it's not the end of the world as a 2 isn't ear piercing and 3rd and final reason is the amount of pressure you need to activate the bell/receiver. For my dog, who is 6 months and 60 pounds (large breed) it's not such a big deal as she's got some strength and weight behind her. For a smaller puppy or a smaller breed dog I would see how they might have more problems activating the switch with their noses and would probably need to be taught to activate it with their paws. I taught my puppy to "touch" the point of my finger with her noise before we ever got this product, so that made it easier for training on the button. I also for the first couple of times, just placed the button on the ground next to the door so that gravity was on her side and when she hit it with her nose it was easier for her to make it click and activate the bell and I praised her a took her outside while telling her to go out and potty. So she made the connection really quick and when I mounted it on the frame of the door which you can see in the video, she already knew she needed to press it until the bell rang. Other than those minor things, this is a pretty nifty little invention. I like it better than the traditional bells on the door because when I go into the laundry room my dog doesn't hear a bell every time and think she's going outside. The bell only rings when she hits the button. It's also nice having a receiver on the outside door so that when she's ready to come in from a playtime and stick chewing session she just rings the bell and I know she's ready to come in.

We have a 4 month old Frenchie that we are potty training and we wanted to try a dog door bell for her to let us know when she needed to go outside. We were at the point in training where we were taking her outside constantly guessing/hoping that she needed/would go. She had no way of telling us that she needed to go. We have a trilevel house and wanted something that would be loud enough for us to hear throughout the house. My husband was a huge skeptic and honestly did not think that the door bell idea was going to work. I ordered it thinking it was worth a try. Our frenchie grasped the concept in 5 DAYS!!!! Our training included us putting the bell on the door about 6 inches from the ground by the opening of the door (about Eye Level for her). Every time we took her out we would take her to the door, set her down and say “Go potty” (our phrase with her during training) and then push the button for the bell. We would push it with her forehead and/or her paw. It is a little different for them to push at first, so we tried both ways. We would take her out and when she would go potty we would praise her and give her a small treat. She started to lay by the bell when she wanted to go out and we would again help her push the bell, take her out, praise her, give a treat when she would actually go potty, etc. Then she would go to the bell and put her nose to it, so we would repeat the steps above. Then she started to hit it with her paw. It surprised all of us when she did it the first time. It was so exciting! We still praise her every time to reinforce it. It has been 3 days of her consistently pushing it and have had no accidents. Things we love: it is white and blends in well with the door. There are several rings for the bell, so our girls had fun helping decide which one. It was so easy to set up! The part that actually rings is separate from the button, so it’s not too loud for the puppy in her face when she pushes it. The ringer part can be moved easily. We bought the 2nd bell that you can put on another door. We are bringing the 2nd bell and the ringer to my parents while we go on vacation so she can continue to use it there. Our family is so excited that this works and that she caught on so fast. She seems happy to be able to tell us when she needs to go outside. It’s hard to train them how to tell us that they actually need to go out vs having to constantly take her out so she has the opportunity to go potty outside and not in our home. Love this! Definitely try it!

I swear by this thing. I have a malamute (5 months old now) and he was having issues telling me when he needed to go outside when I first got him so I tried the bells (just wanted to chew on them), puppy pads (DO NOT RECOMMEND, they will just shred them and it's harder to break the habit going indoors if they're used to that method), and so I put this on a mat next to the front door and it's months later and this is how he communicates now. If he needs food, attention, needs to go outside, when he's tired, etc. he presses it to get my attention. He took to it immediately! The button has a sticky side to be placed on the wall, floor, etc ( to avoid wall scratches and paint damage I put it on a rubber floor mat) and it connects wirelessly to the wall insert. The wall insert is the one that makes the doorbell noise so you can place it anywhere in your home so you can hear it! There are multiple ringtone options so you don't have a boring bell sound and you can even adjust the volume in case you're in an apartment with paper thin walls or even a large home with multiple floors. I struggled with buttons before because they seemed to be too quiet. This one goes up pretty high where I can hear it over making dinner, having guests over, and even blasting music. When my dogs go outside I move the mat outside and they'll press it when they want to come back in. I am considering getting another one specifically for outside it's that good! I can't recommend this enough and it's perfect for potty training!!! It's very easy for them to figure out and it gets your attention immediately.

Original Review: October 8, 2018. We are moving soon and will have a nice new house with new doors and paint. Our old house has scratch marks all over the door frames and doors from our 4 very large dogs and 1 tiny dog scratching to come in and go out. So I was looking for a way for the dogs to notify me that they want to go through the door without the need to scratch on them. I was attracted to the Mighty Paw Smart Bell 2.0 because the activators don't need to be wired to anything or need batteries at all. I was skeptical at first that they would work without power. How can anything send a signal without it having energy of some sort? Then I saw that the energy comes from the force your dog exerts to press the button, and I realized the people who invented this were brilliant. My first purchase arrived, and I was very disappointed to find it only had one activator. I checked Amazon again and found the option to select a version, one with one activator and one with two activators. Double check before you buy! So I sent it back and got the right one. It comes in a labeled box with two activators, one doorbell that plugs into an AC outlet, extra adhesive pads, and an instruction booklet. It also came with bags of screws, but I took the activators apart and I couldn't find anywhere to screw the bases in. There are no pre-drilled holes for the screws anywhere, so I'm quite confused as to why they are included in the package. I used the adhesive that's pre-applied to the backs of the activators and placed them about 1.5' off of the floor on either side of the door so dogs of all sizes can hit them from inside or outside. I plugged the doorbell into the AC outlet, hit the activators, and they worked perfectly right out of the box. There are different settings for how loud you want the doorbell and what sound it makes, but I found the defaults to work perfectly. I find the look of the activators to be fine. They would be conversation starters and don't look bad. My dogs haven't started to hit the doorbell with their noses yet, but they have activated it a few times with their paws, so they're starting to learn what it means, and I know it is only a matter of time before they are trained on it. Their scratching hasn't damaged or dislodged it yet, so it seems durable on the outside as well as the adhesive. The product itself works perfectly, and I haven't found any flaws with it. Overall, I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to save their doors or wow their friends at their well-trained pets. 5/5 stars. UPDATE: September 23, 2019 I loved our doggie doorbells! I got all three of our dogs trained on them. They stopped scratching on the doors and used the doorbells like clockwork. I gave up on the nose training and they took to hitting it with their paws very easily. The adhesive on the backs of the activators is incredibly strong because one of my dogs weighs 136 pounds, and he doesn't rip it off. One day about three months after they started using it regularly to come in out of the Texas heat, I noticed they went back to scratching on the door. I checked the doorbell to find the outside activator didn't work. I pressed it ten times and it only worked once. I kept trying it, and it was very unreliable. Not wanting to lose out on their training, I ordered another activator here on Amazon. I tested it a few times, and it worked fine. Then, I tested it a few days later, and it only activated once out of three tries. Therefore, I have serious issues with the build quality of these activators. The first one I had worked great for three months. The interior door activator still works great to this day, and we will continue using it at the new house. But the outside activator that is on a covered porch in a place where it doesn't get wet or dirty, ceases to work consistently. I still recommend doggie doorbells, but I might have to test another brand in the future. The two activators I removed from the door didn't do any damage, and they were REALLY toough to pull off, so that part is well done. 3/5 stars

I got this doorbell 3 years ago, and I am so happy with the Mighty Bell, and the customer service is AWESOME. It makes a lovely ding-dong when your dog presses the button (with his nose, if it's mounted on the door, or with his paw, if it's on the floor next to the door). Some of the low reviews are from people who don't know how to train this. It's basic target training. There are several ways. Here's the one I recommend -- it's fun and positive and force-free. I start with a hand-target, something I teach ALL my dogs and puppies in my classes . A hand target is so easy, and takes only a few reps for each step if you keep the target at nose level and remove any distractions. I start with a hand target to ensure that the Ding-dong doesn't startle the dog while they're learning the behavior. 1. Have some treats in one hand. With the other hand, present your empty flat palm vertically, fingers downward and tight together, 6-12 inches from your dog's nose, and wait for them to reach out and sniff. They will--and the very INSTANT you feel the nose bump, say YUP! and quickly give a treat. Repeat, over and over, moving your hand around a bit (but NOT pressing it toward the dog) until your dog or puppy is enthusiastically moving to bop your hand target. Reward with extra enthusiasm for hard bumps. 2. Now hold the receiver button in your hand, at the vertical, and repeat steps 1 and 2 (don't pair with the transmitter yet). Say YUP for the bump and give a great. Repeat and repeat. 3. Next step depends on whether you want the bell to be next to the door or ON the door. Hold the lid on the floor, or hold it in on the door at the dog's nose level. Let your dog see that and encourage a nose bump. You should get the same response, but stick a piece of meat to it only if necessary. Throw a party with YUP and another treat. Repeat, repeat, repeat. 4. When the behavior is reliable, pair the transmitter and receiver. Then put the nose bump on cue by saying "Outside?" just before the nose bump that you know will happen. Say YAY! and run outside with your dog for treats and silly play. Repeat and repeat. 5. Attach the button to your door, or to some kind of object you can leave next to the door (an upside-down food bowl or disc of wood/plastic is fine). Keep playing the target game and run outside with your dog to treat and play--and potty. If you follow these steps you'll find out how smart your dog is and the training will go very quickly! Have fun, be patient, and be positive. It's a wonderful thing when your dog rings a bell to go outside, and it's not as hard as you think!

While the bell is amazing and not replacing batteries in middle of winter is equally awesome. The customer service is by far the best! Mine stopped working a couple years after purchase. I called to see if I could just get the bell part. They asked if I could provide the PO. I did. Today I received a replacement no charge. I don't normally leave reviews. This needed mentioning. Great product, better customer service.

This doggie doorbell was an excellent purchase for us. Super easy to install, and the many ring options lets you change it up whenever you get sick of the chime. We taught our puppy to use it, took only a few days for her to master it. Because we can’t see our front door from the main living area, it was a great way for the pup to let us know when she needs to go. It has become invaluable in preventing accidents. No regrets at all.

This is life-changing stuff, absolutely brilliant! Over the course of a weekend, our 10-week-old pup who would slip unnoticed to the door and have an accident when we failed to notice her quietly waiting in place is proud to "Touch" the doorbell to announce her need and desire to go outside, and when she's finished, come back in. There are great notes included in the install guide on training as well! The two sensors are perfect - one for inside - one for outside to signal coming back in. They work great - no issues transmitting from out in the Alberta cold. A ton of ringtones, but only if you like the sing-song musical doorbells that drive most people to disconnect them permanently. There is one bell-tone option, but it gets the job done! The touch sensor is fairly sensitive - good for somewhat tentative nose-taps, but nothing that will be constantly activated accidentally. If in doubt, buy it!

Great in theory and easy to set up and there’s different sounds and volumes to choose from but ended up not working for my dog. Perhaps if we kept trying it would have but she didn’t get it. I’m giving it 4 stars because although it didn’t work for my dog and us, it probably would have if we kept trying so I would still recommend to give it a try.

I should have put it on the floor or lower on the door so my pup can boop it with her nose or just paw at the floor. The training went good and now she just rings to go potty! Works great it’s loud and can adjust volume levels and sounds!
