Exceptional thriller, untouched by the passage of time....
Pray they never re-make this! The trick to making a quality thriller is first suspend reality then envelope the auidence with a story so tight as to leave no plot holes.Vertigo is old, no doubting that, but the direction sufficently rich to allow you to depart your reality for a gentler world when "doin 'er in..." didn't involve a nail gun to the back of the head in close-up!American Psycho [DVD] [2000]On the first count you have to faithfully leave 21C for the world the way Doris Day knew it.I deliberately leave synopsis for the uninitiated, because VERTIGO is well worth watching candidly if you didn't know or long since forgotten. Hitchcock weaves an delicate series of sub-plots that cunningly divert you away from the tale you thought you'd come to watch. SIXTH SENSE's M.NIGHT SHYMALAN learned from the best. There is an emotional connect with all the principal players. Leading from the front, James Stewart dominates but Barbara Belle Geddes (DALLAS's Miss Ellie) is an engaging though under-used second. Novak is introduced and darkly takes over as the romantic interest. There is perfect balance, throughout the pace is patient with no waste material in the beautifully colourful footage. Hitchcock himself is in there...somehere... performing his signature cameo (clumsily copied latterly by M. Night) and the supporting cast is refreshingly trim and strictly relevant.Tradditionalists will revel in the social values of the time - manners, zero language/sex/violence which are relegated to implication or description.Easily stretching beyond two hours, the film is neither tiring or wandering. Very entertaining and genuine departure from the hype-merchandise and celebrity obsessed mis-direction of today.IMDB regularly lists in the top quarter of their 250 all time greatest and with very good reason.Exceptional.

Masterpiece
Amazing film the great Mr Hithchcock at his best, the acting and the storyline really catch and hold your attention.Great lead roles played by James Stewart and Kim(beautiful)Novak, the remastered version just looks crisp and wonderful on a big screen.Another plus is the amazing film score, which really beefs up the different atmospheric scenes, have watched this film a few times already ,like a documentry on late 1950s america the settings look amazing, the plot is filled with suspense and a wicked twist, also below the surface are some deeper ideas and meanings around obession, concepts that seem way ahead of there time, very clever lighting effects create some dreamlike scenes that really look and feel surreal,If you love films with great quality and style you should own this.

Hitchcock lives up to his name
I ordered this movie becasue it had recently been voted best movie of all time.It may not be my absolute favourite but it was very good.Hitchcock always leaves you intrigued with all the twists and turns of his story line and in suspense as to what will happen next.I had not seen this one before and it was better than I expected as the story is not what you expect it to be.This is just as good as his other movies but not so scary. It leaves you feeling good.I wanted to see more at the end, which is unusual nowadays.

My favourite movie of all time...
I love this movie - my favourite James Stewart film, favourite Hitchcock film... in fact, my favourite film. It includes a very interesting documentary on the film and also the restoration. The documentary on the film includes interview with Kim Novak and Hitchcock's family. The atmosphere Hitchcock managed to create - the ground-breaking (and much copied) camera work... the angles he shoots from, are breathtaking. The cast is at their best (Novak especially, who is mesmerising here, never did anything to touch her performance in any other production, in my opinion).Haunting, groundbreaking and breathtaking. If you are only ever going to see one Hitchcock film, make it this one.

A Long Time To Get Anywhere
I love Hitchcock movies, but this was initially very slow moving and wasn't going anywhere, however once it is clear to the viewer that it has all been a clever plot. things start to heat up and I was hoping for the end to KIm Novak and Jimmy Stewart driving off in the sun with the evil man behind the deceptive murder plot put behind bars - but alas that didn't happen. The end was too rushed and spoilt the whole film for me which is a great shame. Still if you are not like me and always want a happy ending, you may well enjoy it as the idea behind the scheming murder is quite clever....................

one of the best films ever made
This is a classic, I don't like hitchcock films much, but I was hooked because its mentioned in 12 monkeys and that's a good film too. But this is a keeper, it rates in my top 10 films of all time Kim Novak is distant yet close, a great performance by her and Stewart, I saw the restored version of the film which also has a documentary, which has an amazing fact about Stewart, he was the highest ranked forces entertainer ever in american history. Buy it if you like stories and take a look at 12 monkeys too.

Classic dark art
Classic masterpiece and a very dark film. There is crime, compassion and punishment and all casualities on the way of no return. And just few bodies. This is film noir in cool clour. Casting is perfect, directing and filming too. Script is accurate and economical. It could be a horror story. He is used by a friend to fullfill a a cunning plot. He plays along but the piti and then compassion takes him to solve the mystery. I can only recommend this film. It is not enntertaiment its art.

Indispensable !

Excellent movie and splendid restoration
This is an excellent movie. I can't add a word to the reviews which have explained the technical aspects of this film, but I can say that the restoration of this film has saved a masterpiece. This release is much more than a movie -It is the complete movie - restored to the way that it's director wanted it to be seen, but it also comes with a "mini" documentary about the film , feature commentary, theatrical trailers and much more. Watching everything on the DVD will give you an appreciation for Hitchcock, the actors and an appreciation for the people who saved this film via it's restoration. The story itself is compelling. It is full of twists and turns, passion and obsession. This is the first film in which I have seen James Stewart in such a role. I am delighted to see Barbara Bel Geddes in this film. I had only seen her as an older actress in Dallas.I know that this film recently replaced Citizen Kane as the number 1 film of all time. I like both films. Both films have their reasons for being great. Many of those reasons are technical and have nothing to do with the actual plots of the film. I don't have the understanding of the technical merits of each film to rate them on that aspect, but I do know that I like them both. This is a great film that has been restored to perfection. The sound score is excellent. I understand that this was Hitchcock's favorite film and that it was somewhat autobiographical - of all his films I know it's one of my favorites.I think I will have to watch it a few more times before I catch all of the little things dropped into the film by Hitchcock. I highly recommend this film.
