Product Description Melinda Gordon communicates with earthbound spirits, ghosts who cling to the living because they have unfinished business that prevents them from moving beyond the familiar plane of existence that we call life. Inspired in part by the work of famed medium James Van Praagh and of Mary Ann Winkowski, a real-life communicator with spirits, GHOST WHISPERER explores the spiritual side of life and death as Melinda navigates among the dead and the living in her sometimes chilling, sometimes heart-rending and sometimes amusing attempts to act as an intermediary between the ghosts and those they haunt. Jim, her husband, worries about the emotional toll this work is taking on his wife as they embark on a new life together. Melinda recently has revealed her gift to her new friend, Delia Banks, a single mom who works in Melinda's antique shop. However, Melinda fears the consequences of drawing Delia into this unconventional world. Melinda also shared her secret with quirky Professor Rick Payne, an expert in occult beliefs and history who thrives on helping her gain insights into the more baffling paranormal phenomena she encounters. For her part, Melinda accepts her unique abilities as a blessing and sometime curse, but always helps her clients, alive or dead, find emotional closure. .com Season OneGhost Whisperer is not a show for cynics (or anyone who hates everything with the word "whisperer" attached to it). Though half of the show aims to make your flesh creep, the other half works just as hard to make everything warm and fuzzy. Ghosts walk into Melinda Gordon's life the way snappy dames walked into Sam Spade's office, hitting her up for aid with a hard-luck story and a whole lot of strings attached. Her job is to help them untie the emotional knot that's keeping them earthbound--which usually involves, in one way or another, telling a still-living friend or relative how much the dead person loved them. Whether it's a Vietnam vet who never met his son, a standup comedian who committed suicide, a bride who died on her big day, or a poltergeist child, in the end Melinda--assisted by her hunky paramedic husband Jim and vaguely useless best friend Andrea--will find a way to lead them to the light. (Ghost Whisperer is evasive about its theological implications, but Melinda's black-hatted nemesis from the season's end has a distinctly devilish air.) Keeping a foot in both worlds as Melinda is Jennifer Love Hewitt (Party of Five, Garfield), an actress who doesn't seem entirely natural; between her cartoonish physical dimension (the show isn't shy about displaying her bosom), her fake eyelashes, and the seemingly molded contours of her face, she's like a life-sized doll. Unfortunately, this quality lends a similarly plastic feel to her telegenic smile and earnest looks of compassion. The scripts are strictly middle-of-the-road tv fare, with obvious turns of plot and heavy-handed emotional crises, but the special effects conjure some eeriness. Extras include docs on the show's development, the lovely opening credits (based on the art of Maggie Taylor), and the paranormal investigators whose work inspired the show, along with a handful of episode commentaries and deleted scenes. Fans will not feel cheated. --Bret FetzerSeason TwoThe second season of Ghost Whisperer--that cornucopia of spookiness, warmhearted crescendos, and cleavage-emphasizing outfits--strengthened the show's basic formula with tighter writing and engaging new characters. After an opening episode that resolves the first season's cliffhangers (with a black-hatted baddie and a beloved "earthbound spirit" in peril), our heroine Melinda Gordon (Jennifer Love Hewitt) launches forward with three new friends: Dr. Rick Payne (Jay Mohr, Jerry Maguire), a prickly, sarcastic professor of the occult; Delia Banks (Camryn Manheim, The Practice), a skeptical but warmhearted realtor who helps Melinda run her antique shop; and Delia's son Ned (Tyler Patrick Jones), a rebellious but goodhearted scamp. More significantly, the ratio of creepy thrills and beatific resolutions has been recalibrated to crank up the thrills. Which is good news--while helping ghosts find the light may be Melinda's reason for being, those happy endings are more satisfying when preceded by scary special effects and what-will-happen-next chills. On top of that, the show's creators carefully weave in a season-long story arc that culminates a three-episode conclusion (which, naturally, leaves plenty of questions open for the third season to investigate) involving a rival ghost whisperer whose motivations are not so selfless as Melinda's. Clearly, the show's fans were hungry for more of Melinda's stoic, hunky husband Jim (David Conrad); not only does he get many more opportunities to be unflinchingly supportive, he gets haunted by a supermodel and has a best friend who starts dating Delia. Stories range from a vengeful cheerleader to a phantom dog to an old boyfriend of Melinda's, who even in death hasn't gotten over her winsomeness. Most often people are haunted by family members and lost loved ones, who--though they knock things over, possess the living, and generally raise a ruckus--are almost always seeking forgiveness or to pass on sage advice. Through it all, Melinda summons her pluck and marches into danger wearing what seems to be an endless supply of flowy coats and low-cut party dresses. Ghost Whisperer is a love-it-or-hate-it show, and those who love it do so passionately. The show's creators reciprocate with an abundance of extras, ranging from earnest episode commentaries and behind-the-scenes docs to a series of "webisodes" of an internet serial about a bicycle delivery guy learning to cope with death to a peculiar "Jennifer Love Hewitt Speed Painting Video." --Bret FetzerSeason ThreeThe first thing you'll notice about the third season of Ghost Whisperer: More special effects! In the opening episode, a street collapses into a black, yawning crevasse. Eternally dewy Jennifer Love Hewitt stars as Melinda Gordon, who speaks to the dead with a firm glint in her eye and an abundance of cleavage (though the costume department is a tad more discreet this time around). With the assistance of her hunky husband (David Conrad), her skeptical best friend (Camryn Manheim, The Practice), and a wisecracking professor of the occult (Jay Mohr, Saturday Night Live), Melinda helps ghosts cross over to the other side. But woven through the entire third season is Melinda's investigation into her own family secrets (featuring Martin Donovan, The Opposite of Sex, as Melinda's mysterious father), culminating in a high-stakes season finale that's much more satisfying that season two's fairly forced conclusion. Mind you, this season is unlikely to convert viewers who prefer their ghost stories without warmhearted resolutions (almost every ghost just needs to tell someone how much he/she love him/her), but there are some clever twists and setups: A dead photographer creates pictures from the afterlife; a mother actively cultivates being haunted by her dead son because she's afraid he's too young to cross over on his own. Several episodes reveal how the town of Grandview is built on the ruins of an older city, which is--surprise!--full of unhappy ghosts. This gesture towards cultivating a mythology smacks a bit of Buffy the Vampire Slayer or The X-Files, but who doesn't like a haunted underworld? The more the show leans towards spookiness and sprinkles the earnestness on lightly, the stronger it is. Fans will be pleased with the abundance of extras, which include commentaries, webisodes, making-of documentaries, backstory about Melinda, and an entertainingly snarky interview with Mohr. --Bret Fetzer

Good show overall
I usually watch this show in waiting rooms. It seems like every waiting room I ever go to only shows this on their TV. I decided to really watch the show one day and I really liked it. I soon got the complete series and I really like it.I don't think I can make any structured review so I'll just point out some random items I found interesting.1) Two episodes on the 5th season skips for me. It's not bad and I am able to finish watching but it is rather annoying.2) I got to hand it to the show writers for making a show about the afterlife without ever crossing over to religion or theology debates. As a matter of fact, the show doesn't even describe the afterlife as either heaven or hell. Jennifer Love Hewitt bypasses this entirely because in the show she only sees spirits/ghosts but never the "light." On a few episodes we visit the concept of the "light" but it is always in symbols.3) The show is in the early days before the explosion of internet, smartphones, and social media. With that said, Jennifer Love Hewitt's character is very tech savvy with her computer and searching for people. In nearly every episode, Jennifer Love Hewitt looks up something by doing a internet search. I find this interesting because it wasn't until the social media boom and smartphone growth where people really caught on searching for people online. At the time of the show, searching for people online is rather unconventional and difficult other than posts on MySpace or the likes. There is no YouTube and most videos and documentaries were at the mercy of whatever website hosted them.4) At the end of every episode, Jennifer Love Hewitt has gathered everyone involved to send the spirit off into the light. The spirit says goodbye and whatever is keeping them earthbound is resolved. A major annoyance during this phase of the episode is that many times a ghost tells Jennifer Love Hewitt "can you tell them..." And Jennifer Love Hewitt says, "I will." Yet, nothing in the previous conversation seem to indicate that the ghost meant to wait to tell the individuals at a later time. Instead, we get a mixture of where Jennifer Love Hewitt repeats back what the ghost says, then somehow the ghost says, "Can you tell them..." and automatically Jennifer knows it is meant to be said after the ghost enters the light. Yet, in many episodes, Jennifer seems to mix this up. I think the writer dropped the ball on this and it is rather annoying in many cases to me taking away the emotional impact of whatever is happening.Overall though the show is really great. I highly recommend this show to anyone. There is a rather strange twist in the story mid season but I can't spoil it for everyone. It turns rather ridiculous but I think the writers wanted to spice things up a bit.

Great show
This is a great show to have. The case that it comes in on the other hand could be a lot better.

Young Marrieds Stay Strong as She Helps Spirits Cross Over
Ghost Whisperer (Complete Series) benefits from the attractive personality and engaging performance of Jennifer Love Hewitt, a clever premise, and uniformly excellent writing. The anchor of the story for 5 seasons is the totally loyal partnership of young married couple Melinda Gordon and Jim Clancy. It's a pleasure to watch the deeply loving couple remain supportive, faithful and positive in their relationship no matter what ghostly challenge is thrown at them. It's particularly fresh that the series begins with husband Jim already accepting of Melinda's supernatural ability.I bought the 5 season complete package. I checked the first several discs and they work fine. The subtitles also work - - contrary to a previous review -- though not all seasons have them. The stories are neither too light nor too heavy, finding a nice balance between an occasional scare and some really sweet interactions between Melinda, her ghosts, and the family and friends of those who need to find their way into the light but have unfinished business first. The supporting cast is appealing, with Jay Mohr being a standout for me, though all, including guest stars, deserving of an honorable mention.Jennifer Love transmits her feelings authentically in stories that need earnestness, and she in particular is called upon to cry at the end of most episodes, since they often finish with a deceased loved one "going into the light." In any other show so much crying simply could not work, but the surprise for me is that these endings are quite honestly believable because these story endings actually call for this kind of response. I do marvel that Jennifer Love is able to call up these strong emotions on such a frequent basis, and with great authenticity. I can't swear no glycerin is involved, but I can say it doesn't seem so.This is an affecting series, which again is a rare undying love story, and at the same time an enjoyable series of stories that had me looking forward to every episode from start to finish. There could have been more than 5 seasons quite easily, and in fact the cast could return and do a very nice additional turn (or more) down the road, particularly since Ms Hewitt was an executive producer and also directed on this series. What a gal!

A heck of a lot of wasted disc space
I always loved the story of Melinda Gordon the Ghost Whisperer back in the day so I thought why not buy it and pop it all onto an external hard drive so I wouldn't have to get up and change discs. Well that was wishful thinking! Everything is so hard to do these days its a wonder if anything you spend your money on is actually yours! Anyway theres between 3-4 episodes a disc, forced advertsements for old movies and the first couple of seasons you have to click on each episode one by one, then when you get to season 3 or 4 then you get the play all button but you lose the episode titles! In truth it all seems like a hash to make you think you're getting more than what you are but if you're a "film-buff" then you might enjoy the commentaries attatched to some episodes, me...not so much. A heck of a lot of wasted disc space if you ask me.

If you like ghosts and beautiful clothes, this is the show for you!
Love this series, both the story-line and the characters.. JLH is so beautiful and the stylist on the show was amazing, the outfits are so stunning and makes it a joy to watch. The stories are not too far fetched, ok maybe a little, but mostly touching or fun and not silly, except for the final series which goes a bit weird, but once you get that far into the Gordon's history, you have no choice but to continue watching..For most of the early series you can watch one episode without needed to know much more about the series, which is quite nice, well it was for my husband who can't watch a whole box set to save his life, later on the running themes become more important to keep track of .. I love the main characters Melinda, Delia and Jim, you really want to be their friend (when the ghosts are not around, mind you) I much preferred Rick to Eli, but both are funny, likeable guys and the cosy small town setting is just perfect (same vibe as Gilmore Girls..).Just a great watch, I would recommend it..Oh and did I mention the clothes Melinda wears, her hair and not least her shoes? Just gorgeous!!! :-)

Brilliant series
I bought this for my partner as we were go through new series at a time and this was before Netflix. This was delivered in perfect condition and worked brilliantly. The series itself was great and one of the few paranormal series that I could get him to watch, and I wonder why. I am going to get him to watch Supernatural one day!! We have actually been planning to re watch this lately with Lockdown and that's when I remembered that I never reviewed it. Brilliant news, it still works perfectly.

Excellent
I ordered this as my wife saw a preview of it somewhere.Arrived nice and fast like all of our Amazon orders. No problems and no damage. The stories are absolutely fantastic. We're still on the first series and it's hard to watch one or two episodes at a time. It's usually 3 or 4.Marvelous to look at with good acting and storylines. If I'm picky the only thing I find is the constant music throughout to be a little grating. But I can live with it.Not sure if it's as good as Lesley Sharps's AFTERLIFE but it's certainly excellent.

Season 3 disc 3 freezes and doesn’t work
I brought this item a few weeks back and I watched the first two seasons and everything was fine, however once I got onto the third disc of season 3 towards the end of the first episode it would freeze and go straight back to the main menu. I had a look on the back to see a lot of scratches so I requested a exchange which amazon sent the next day. Unfortunately when I went to play the same disc again it did the exact same thing, it isn’t my DVD player as I have tried it with two of them and it does the same thing. I will now be getting a refund as it seems to be an occurring problem which is extremely annoying.
