User friendly version of big Marauder
I bough the original Marauder X7R a year ago on a good sale and I was very impressed with the sheer amount of lumen power in a hand held light. It will truly light up a yard and a hillside. But it is hard for me to hold. I have small hands. This Mini is much easier to hold. It is easy to get a good grip and feels secure. The Mini is about 16 oz and the X7R is 23.5 (1 vs 1.5 lbs). The Mini feels much lighter. This is important if you have to carry all day/night.The safety switch (to avoid turning on by accident in your backpack and setting things on fire) is very different. The X7R is just a difficult to press rubber coated switch. The Mini requires a specific twist of a rotary dial and then pressing the main switch. The versatility of the Mini is great as well. You can go between a spotlight @ 900 lumens to a 7000 lumen flood. The X7R is all flood, but is rated at 12,000 lumens. Side by side its a pretty obvious difference. The max light in both is called a turbo and automatically lowers in 2 to 3 minutes, likely to reduce thermal overload. Neither one gets too hot to touch. I have an old Fenix and Klarus that do not auto-dim but they get quite hot after 5 minutes on high. Not practical without gloves. Also, the Mini has a user replaceable battery (a 32650 (big Li-Ion!) and the XR7 uses 4 spot-welded 18650's. Not intended to be user replaceable but there are some YouTube videos on how to do if you are handy enough.Lastly the Mini can project a red green or blue beam. I dont have much use for this but it is kind of cool. After using both for many nights over several weeks, I feel the Mini is a better general use light. The instant switch from spot to flood is great. But if you need a lot of floodlight, such a sweep over a larger outdoor area, or freak out an intruder animal, the X7R is great. But the X7R is not available anymore. You would have to compare it to the Marauder 2 but I don't have that one.I think the Mini is a winner. To choose between either one at full retail, I would get the Mini, hands down. The comp is $329 (X7R) vs $199 (Mini) or so.
