Brilliant Read
After previously reading and enjoying another series of books by this author, I was wondering if this new series would be as good. I need not have worried, as this first book has been brilliant. Fast paced, great characters and an unputdownable read - more of the same please!

Great book, gritty, action packed and informative
This is a great book for the avid historical fiction reader. Fans of Cornwell and Harffy will certainly enjoy it. It's action packed from the start, and takes an interesting view on humanity. Our hero, Beornoth, is fallible yet honourable. I can't wait to see where his story goes. This first instalment sets up future books well, and will presumably culminate in the battle of Maldon. It doesn't quite have the character development of Cornwell, or the intricate story twists of Harffy, but it's a very solid book.My only qualm is a few anachronisms. In a particular battle scene (this is set in 990 England) someone's nose is struck and 'bursts like a tomato'. Tomatoes weren't introduced to England until the 16th century!!

Better than Cornwell
Gibbons improves with time and experience. His tales are more expansive than Bernard Cornwell’s Uhtred series and you’re carried along without effort. I loved this first instalment and can’t wait to start the second book

Good read
I enjoyed following the main character in is journey from start to finish but felt the ending was too short as I was enjoying the battle scene

Fast-paced story, good knowledge of the epoch
This is a very fast-paced and action packed novel, which personally I enjoyed. The author also has a solid knowledge of this epoch, right down to the particulars of every day life, which is impressive in itself and really helps bring the story to life. I recommend!

Phew, what a tale!
This was another, historically accurate, tale of Britain's dark ages and this time it was told from the Saxon perspective. It began with Beornoth, a disgraced and drunken thegn, reduced to acting as village reeve for a group of impoverished peasants. However, he seizes the chance to redeem himself when the Viking king, Olaf Tryggvason, and his general, Skarde, invade England's southern kingdom. What follows is a tale of warfare and revenge, full of unlikable characters but all typical of this era. Full blooded action for start to finish and well worth a read.

Good story, characters well written and the hero is a bad man, grabbing the next in the series to enjoy

A good, well researched read!
As an avid reader of historical fiction, I found this book to be engaging, well researched and well edited (a real treat, considering several series that I have read lately). Looking forward to continuing through the rest of this series!

Pretty good
Not going to lie. I almost didn't want to read the book after the first several chapters. But it got much better after that. Turned into a good story. On to book 2.

Great read, full of action
What a great book, loved this first in a new series by Peter Gibbons. It was well written, with a good pace to the story and great new characters. Will definitely keep reading this series as it kept me in the story until the last page.

Really enjoyed this book
Great story telling that just keeps the pages turning and I really like the imperfections of the main character as well as the great deeds!
