Another work of Art!
Cuckold Point. Anticipating The author's further 'Tom Pascoe' yarn has been something to look forward to and it has immediately fulfilled its promise! Whilst not wishing to pressurise such a talented writer it has not been easy to wait for his latest work. The reward, however, is here, within another of his super books. At the halfway mark I cannot think of a way to pace my reading sufficient to prolong the story which I am reluctant to finish. Clever and interesting as the conclusion draws nigh, super work but let us not wait quite so long for another! Please!Fred

The best in the series so far
This series is getting better with each book. In the first book, the characters were a bit one-dimensional, and the plot a bit predictable, but by this volume the author seems to have got into his stride. The books are set in London, at the end of the eighteenth century. The main character is Tom Pascoe, an ex-Naval Officer, now employed by the newly established river police. In this volume, he is a much more rounded character than in the earlier ones. Granted, you have the benefit of getting to know someone in a series, rather than a single novel, but here is seems more self-aware, more attuned to how his actions affect others. And there are some interesting supporting characters as well, from both sides of the law. A few new characters appear, and the author does well to keep you guessing as to whether each may be important, or disappear as quickly as they appear.I won't go into the plot, but it revolves around a shipment of raw silk, and involves crime, diplomacy, espionage, and there are one or two twists along the way. The atmosphere of the time and place are handled well, and the attention to detail admirable.I am looking forward to the next in the series. If you are interested in historical fiction, then this series is definitely worth a try, particularly for its rather unusual setting in place and time.

Pascoe and the Yankees
Cuckold Point is set in London's docks in October 1799. In this his fourth investigation Captain Tom Pascoe is in pursuit of a stolen consignment of silk. The story begins in revolutionary France but quickly switches back to Erith, Kent by the River Thames as sailing master Robert Cox in desperate need of money for his wife and his three daughters has a fateful meeting in the bar of the Royal Oak with Daniel Creech.Creech is a forty five year old villain who enjoys the thrill of seeing pain and fear in another man's eyes.He needs Cox to use his hoy. the Sisters to help him obtain a large cargo of silk bales which Creech intends to steal and sell for a huge profit.Tom Pascoe and Sam Hart become aware of the plan to steal the silk and set off in pursuit of the plotters through the warren of streets and waterways that make up the London docks. The case is made more complicated by the arrival of Tom Pascoe's brother William in London from his home in the tiny coastal hamlet of Seahouses near Bamburgh Castle.During the course of his pursuit of the stolen silk Pascoe encounters two American agents, Milton Brougham and Bill Hawkes who are also in pursuit of the silk on behalf of the American government.Violence and intrigue explodes as Pascoe and the river police hunt down Creech and try to prevent a letter falling into the wrong hands.Cuckold Point is an excellent addition to a fine series.

This looks like an increasingly good series of stories
This looks like an increasingly good series of stories. Not to be missed if you like the Napoleonic wars from an unusual perspective.

Not the best
Nowhere near as good as the other books. In previous books Tom had an on going fight with the Frenchman. Now its being replaced with Creech who will obviously be in the next book. After all that happened with William thought Tom would have been a bit more vigilant. But I am sure that will be the story for the next book. Not sure if I want to read it when it's out.

Once again Patrick Easter cleverly combines history and fiction as he portrays life on the river Thames in a time when poverty, crime and corruption were rife. Tom Pascoe of the Thames river police, fights to maintain law and order as a parade of desperate and tragic characters cross his path. A compelling tale of greed, betrayal and courage.
