Irig mic cast
I brought this to record my podcast shows on my iPod and after a lot of fiddling with the settings on my iPod I had a reasonably good sounding recording. If you like to hear the sound quality please visit theveggrowerpodcast.co.uk and listen to a podcast. The mic itself is quiet small and the plastic body of this does worry me as I feel it may break if your not careful with it but as a microphone for the price it's recording quality is pretty good

Not enough of improvement on inbuilt mic
I bought this as I wanted to record meetings. Actually the inbuilt mic on my iPhone 4 does a pretty good job and this microphone, while an improvement, was not a dramatic improvement when used on a stand. It records much better from the front - ok you can rotate the mic - but the point is I would not say it was omnidirectional - something useful for meetings as you can stick the phone in the middle of a meeting room table. Which then questions why use it on a stand which means there is a front and back. Maybe better to lie it flat on a table. When used up close (hand held) then the quality may be slightly better than the inbuilt mic but again it is questionable, unless you are a pro, that you would notice the difference. Then again, for a pro application, I doubt you would use an iPhone as the recording device.Product does not feel that well built. I am worried that the little switch to select hi/lo sensitivity will break over time and also to unplug the mic (to allow you to playback using the inbuilt speaker) you simply have to pull on the body of the mic to remove it. It feels like one day the mic will come off in my hand and the 3.5mm jack plug will be left in the iPhone. Also, the marketing of this is a bit deceptive in that it says "two free apps". I took this to be a software bundle and so in effect part of my purchase. Well this is true but the apps are indeed free whether you have bought the mic or not and so there is nothing really been given away with the mic. The iRig recording app has some in app purchases that you still have to pay for and ditto for the Vocalive app which is quite expensive by app store standards. The mic has an earphone socket and so you can monitor the recording. Probably something you can't do with the inbuilt mic as to plug in an ear phone would probably make the phone think you were plugging in a headset and cut the inbuilt mic.Given that it is small enough to lose easily and easy enough to forget to have with you when you need it then I can see it not getting used as much as it should - especially if the fall back of the built in mic is good. On the whole one of those novelty purchases but not one of my better ones.

Good sound in the main.
I'm very impressed with the sound quality of this microphone. It's a great deal better than the iPhone's built in mic and has reduced background noise. The mic would be even better with a further pop shield to reduce the occasional peak in some situations.

Like the curate's egg
good and bad - like the curate's egg! Easy to use, small enough to carry around, did the job! But when it came to editing the recording I was at a loss, Instructions almost nil - maybe I have to pay to upgrade App?

Ok for notetaking and podcasts but won't do serious audio
Got this for some interviews I need to record - obviously not broadcast quality, just extended notetaking really. The device is OK but fairly cheaply made and spins around on the jack plug of the phone a bit. The iRig app is distinctly average and working out things like record levels is a bit of an art. The mic itself seems to do a reasonable job of filtering out background noise so I am not knocking it too much. FTP transfer is built into the app too - so that is quite good. Think I probably should have gone for the iRig Field mic which is twice the price but looks a bit more solid. Anyway this will do for now.

the video demonstration I saw of it before buying made it seem like it would offer a much better quality than what ...
Bought this to use with my Huawei Y530 and iPod Touch 4th Generation, the video demonstration I saw of it before buying made it seem like it would offer a much better quality than what I found when using it.It's great that it's just plug and play but the audio was still rather tinny and in a environment with background noise a lot of it was picked up even with the setting that were suggested in the video. Its a nice adapter if you're needing one but I would say don't expect miracles from it, its not going to give you the quality of something like the Zoom H4n or other Zoom recorders.

Doesn't work with 3rd party apps or act as a mic for your 'phone
I bought this, foolishly excited at the marketing blurb. Took it to the Apple Store to set it up with my iPhone in a One to One lesson, as I'm about to travel for a couple of months on courses and thought I could record my lectures and in a worst case scenario, just use the mic in my iPhone as a hands free mic when driving. You can only use it to record using the recording software they provide and unless you use wired headphones, plugged into the side of the mic, to listen to what's been recorded -you have to remove the mic to listen to playback by removing the mic (because it operates through the headphone socket and the iPhone assumes it's a headphone).I can't use it with my dragon dictation software, even if I download the files through iTunes, then upload them into Dragon - although how difficult is it to produce a mic that operates with all your apps on your iPhone ....... And then they say that you can use it on conference calls, but after trying it myself unsuccessfully, the guy at the Genius Bar said that when using the phone with the mic plugged in, the phone still uses it's own mic.......finally, when switched to "Hi", the phone picks up crystal clear background noise, which in a meeting means lots of rustling papers, coughs and side chats, which you can't filter out and in a lecture hall, lots of side conversations etc., and when switched to "Lo" one has to hold it within a few inches of your mouth - so pay twice the money on here and get something better suited to your specific problem that won't leave you bending over a table talking to your 'phone .......
