Since being an owner of a Zhiyun Crane 3, Smooth Q2, Crane M2, and Smooth 4 I am extremely familiar with the quality and performance of all Zhiyun products. This Smooth 5S is no exception. I originally fell in love with the Smooth 4 because of all its great features. Like it’s older brother, the 5S allows you to zoom and focus with the large side knob. Most people when they try to zoom with their phone, have problems, doing smooth, steady, zooms. This gimbal takes all the stuttering out of your zooms.Set up is simple. Just unlock all your access is and balance your phone in the gimbal. This gimbal is extremely forgiving on the varying weights of different cell phones. You can actually mount iPhone Pro Maxes, as well as the larger Samsung phones. If you desire, this gimbal will also accommodate action cameras, such as a GoPro. Although you cannot see the rear viewfinder on the GoPro, you can still acquire good movement with this gimbal.With the addition of the built-in selfie light and the snap in accessory selfie light, you can light things in dim or dark environments and regulate the amount of light dispersed by turning the wheel around the lightbulb icon, and either increasing or decreasing the amount of light output. This set also includes colored plastic snap on gels that will help balance your light in different lighting situations.I found my iPhone 13 pro worked extremely well with the apps that were installed from Zhiyun. It allowed the gimbal to fully control all aspects of my iPhone. There are many features that are included in the app which makes using this gimbal a lot of fun and adds to the creative process.The gimbal has five different modes being PF, L, F, POV & V or VORTEX mode. Through the app it also allows you to draw a box around your self, and will allow the cell phone camera on the gimbal to follow you as you move around. It also allows you to do a really cool forced perspective shots as was used in a lot of Alfred Hitchcock movies. It also allows for you to use the gimbal and control streaming directly out of your cell phone if you are in a good Wi-Fi or high connectivity cellular environment.This gimbal is extremely easy to use, to balance and work with. As with all Zhiyun products, it is extremely well-made, ergonomically well laid out, contains a plethora of features, and is somewhat easy to use, all you need to do is explore the app, and spend some time with the product itself.I definitely recommend this gimbal to people who want to push their production standards a little bit higher level. Although the iPhone has extremely great stabilization, this gimbal adds to the movement quality of a recorded scene.

The media could not be loaded. My main hobbies are hiking and taking videos. My hands are not that stable and I don't like using the digital stabilization on my phone because it crops out a lot of the video and reduces the quality. And then I discovered gimbals.The main reasons I chose the Smooth 5S were strength to handle a big phone, incredible ranges for movement with no limits on the pan axis, and the built-in fill light. The 5S can handle a Samsung Galaxy Ultra phone with no problems. There was no shaking or shuddering under the weight at odd angles. All the motions were smooth and fluid. Switching between modes, recentering, and other basic functions were pretty intuitive. If you are just going to use the gimbal with your built-in camera app like I do 95% of the time, then this gimbal checks a lot if not all of the boxes.The fill lights with the combo kit are wonderful. When you turn them on, they are on low. I watched a lot of reviews before deciding on a gimbal and I saw a few people who said the fill light is too low. It is not. You can dial the brightness way up with the wheel easily with your thumb. Adjusting the light brightness when going between light and dark areas on the fly helps keep the video brightness even and level. One is built in, so you always have one on you with the S5.The ZY Cami software is OK. One thing I really like about it is the experimental mode. On my phone a lot of 3rd party camera apps are locked at 4K 30 when my phone can do 4K 60. I came across experimental mode and it unlocked the 4K 60 and it worked. Follow mode was OK. The camera followed me when walking slowly, but quick motions will lose you. That seems to be an issue on most gimbal software. It is still cool if you want to walk around and talk to the camera and have no camera man. The downside of the software is it only uses the main lenses of my phone, so my zoom is limited to 8x. When I do want to go bigger with the zoom, I am using my camera to frame and sunset and have the gimbal on a tripod. In those cases I just use the default camera app with the phone connected directly to the gimbal using bluetooth. You can start/stop a video or take a picture with just the gimble and no app.The StaCam app is pro level and a lot more interesting. This is where you can use the side wheel for either focus or zoom. I like to play with the focus to reveal and transition scenes and objects. Plus this software has a lot of options to record in log and other settings that pros use in post processing. I use these on my action cams and you can really bring out some colors and detail using these if you know how to do that in post. You can tweak almost any camera setting you can imagine and see all your image data in StaCam. If you have any Zhiyun gimbals, this app is worth checking out.Both apps do have some features that require a yearly subscription. When I looked the price was reasonable, but the combo kit comes with a free year. I have not activated mine yet. I am waiting until the spring for when I really start traveling around and hiking. If I remember, I’ll come back and talk about those features.With the tripod that fits on the bottom and the range of motion on this gimbal, you can easily do a POV video and show people what you are looking at. The thing I like most about this gimbal is the range of motion. You are not going to be turning in any direction with the joystick/tracking and have the phone stop moving because the range is too short on an axis.Other things I’d like to mention. You can charge your phone from the gimbal. The gimbal has a great battery life and USB-C ports. It is sturdy and fits perfectly in my tech bag. All the axis stay locked in my bag when hiking.The controls are very smooth and have a lot of steps for steady and slow motions, like when flying an RC on a pro RC controller. Balancing is easy. I have the combo kit with the extra fill light and filters, but on its own, the 5S has no extra pieces or pieces you can lose. And finally, this gimbal has a death like grip on my phone. I have no worries about my phone falling out with or without a case.That was a lot more that I wanted to write and I didn’t even mention the case that came with it and some other things. Same thing with the video. It was 40 minutes and I had to do some editing to get it to upload.TLDR, this gimbal combo is perfect for what I need it for. No regrets.

The app for the product is the worst ever. Completely confusing, over convoluted with introductory information, annoying signing up requirements, etc. The app layout is not practical and an entire mistake, while being very poorly designed for user friendly acclamation. It made the gimbal spiral out of control and set itself to features I did not select. Wasted so much time trying to get the gimbal operational. I would never again buy one of these Zhiyun cell phone gimbals. Manufacturer needs to make the app instructions simpler, direct and disregard all the fancy excessive material. Waste of an investment.

I have been using a Gimbal like this for a year now for video recording in church settings. I love it specially if the speaker is walking around a lot the videos are very nice and SMOOTH.
