Otherwise it is useless. Also make sure you aren't cleaning the area ...
This worked well for me. I felt nothing for the first bit of my tattoo but as the gel oxidized I was able to feel more pain. It is imperative when you use this to wrap it tight with saran wrap! Otherwise it is useless. Also make sure you aren't cleaning the area you are getting tattoo with any alcohol based product. It will neutralize the effect of it. But after using this I won't ever get tattooed without it again.

Great for Tattoos!
I ordered this for my girlfriend who was getting her sock (tattoo) finished. She was stressing about her impending evening of pain. I, being the great girlfriend that I am, starting to research ways to alleviate tattoo pain.I stumbled upon lidocaine. I researched the best way to apply. We applied a THICK layer, applied plastic wrap to keep it in. We had timed it for two hours before the tattoo artist would arrive. The artist was hours late. Then when she arrived they started chatting. Be meeting me, I started to panic because I read that if you leave it on TOO long it can cause HYPERsensitivity. I didn’t tell my gf this at this point because of the placebo effect.Artist got to business... at this point the gel had been on her leg for several hours. The needle went in and my girlfriend said it took away like 99% of the pain!! We didn’t apply the gel high enough and when the artist did that area my gf was able to really compare the treated part vs the untreated part. It was night and day.I HIGHLY recommend this product for tattoos.

Did not work at all!!!!!!!
The product did not work at all. I went to get the rest of my chest tattoo done today and I put this numbing gel on an 2 hours before my tattoo. It felt the same as getting my outline done extremely painful my chest tattoo also was my sternum and that part is the worst pain I've ever felt . It was also a cover up of a bad tattoo. So that is why it took 3 sessions. One I did without anything and the second session I did Hush gel and that worked amazing but its 50 something a bottle. So I ran a crossed this one because I didn't have the money to pay another 50 something when this tattoo already is costing more than I hoped for and this stuff was cheaper and had good reviews. I felt everything it didn't numb at all and I am not happy.

MEEEHHHHH
I'm getting a half sleeve that took about 6 hours of coloring inside of my Bicep and I put some under my arm. It's not the best but it works a little but. Just a bit. You got to bite the bullet for the rest of the needles and you'll need to keep using it after about 30 minutes. 3.5 from me because it wears off fast.

Great product if you are a needle phobic person getting a tattoo
I used this on recommendation of a family member. I needed something to ease some of the discomfort as I was going to be getting my first tattoo at 47 years young. My daughter has routine blood draws and uses a prescription prilocaine / lidocaine combination which is 2% of each. For comparison This product is 4% lidocaine. The prescription is 2 oz tube for five dollars. This is a 2 oz bottle for a bit under twenty dollars. I didn't know what to expect from this product but I was very pleased I took a chance.I had planned on getting a small wrist tattoo on my inner arm. I applied the gel liberally in a thick layer about 3 inches up just in case, about 30 mins prior to leaving for my appointment, covered it with plastic and off I went. I ended up getting a larger tattoo than I had thought. So about 3 inches had been covered by the gel and 3 inches were not. Wow what a difference! I feel like I was able to get a fair comparison as only half of the area getting the tattoo had the gel on. With the gel it felt like a slight tickle, so I was like, oh wow this is not bad at all, but without the gel - it felt like someone was scraping me with a fork in the same spot over and over, um ouch! I've had four children and though my husband joked this pain should have been no issue, I definitely felt it, and did not enjoy that aspect for sure. But it did give me a good way to compare with or without the gel for relief for sure.I would definitely recommend this gel to anyone who may be leary of the pain of the tattoo needle. I would imagine this would be especially beneficial for those having more sensitive areas of skin tattooed.

Works great, varies per person
This stuff is amazing. During my initial outline of my back, we discovered that I had a very sensitive area at the top of my back, so I was concerned that I would not be able to get through adding color to this area. My tattoo artist recommended this stuff, which I was very curious if a numbing agent would truly work.I was successfully able to get through my coverup and coloring of my upper back using this stuff. I will say that it varies per person, how long the numbing agent will last. I had put this on 1 1/2 hours before the tattoo, it lasted 1 hour. I also used the Derma Numb spray during my session, which allowed me to get through the tattoo with little to no pain. You will still have a little pain here and there, especially if you have overlays of coloring, but it does decrease the intensity of pain points.
