Drama based on a true story about two men who defied the rules of their time to launch a medical revolution, set against the backdrop of the Jim Crow South. Working in the 1940s Baltimore on an unprecedented technique for performing heart surgery on 'blue babies', Dr. Alfred Blalock (Alan Rickman) and lab technician Vivien Thomas (Mos Def) form an impressive team. But even as they race against time to save a dying baby, the two occupy very different places in society. Blalock is the wealthy white Head of Surgery at John Hopkins Hospital; Thomas is black and a skilled carpenter with little money. As Blalock and Thomas invent a new field of medicine, saving thousands of lives in the process, social pressures threaten to undermine their collaboration and tear their friendship apart.

SUPERB , ENGROSSING TELLING OF UNMISSABLE TRUE EVENTS .
It is not often that a film comes along , that is an automatic 5* . I found this film engrossing from start to finish . The two leads were at the height of their powers . Frankly , to find a film that has purpose , direction and its own gravitas , is rare in this day and age . A must watch , has these pioneers of surgery , creating the template to save millions of lives , yearly , and for which I would not be here to write this review .

An interesting story. Main story dealing with "Blue Baby ...
An interesting story. Main story dealing with "Blue Baby Syndrome" and how the technique came about to help these babies with an underlying story of racism. Alan Rickman, always an interesting actor, plays the white head surgeon, who uses the black lab technician's (Vivien) skill and knowledge without thinking of the discrimination and problems Vivien has to live with. An thought provoking and entertaining story.
