Q: How wide is the slot for Leave it to Weave?

3/8" ribbon fits just right. You can use smaller though, it will just have more slide space and you will be able to see more of the "bars" between slots.

Q: I'm wanting to add pages to a k&co smash folio, the American crafts similar punch i found to be only decorative not functional at all. Is this one?

I hope I understand you clearly. It is a border punch, and is therefore decorative; it will not, as far I know, produce the pattern and form necessary to create a binding effect for additional pages to a k&co smash folio. Then again, I've never used a border punch to that end.

It might work, but it is really a decorative punch. If it is spiral, with just holes, you might consider the Carl Ring Ring, it makes just holes for spiral books.

Q: what is the actual margin of paper needed to use punch?

I am unsure what you are asking about an actual margin of paper needed. This design is not a very deep one however, I always go edge to edge with the design. You just start with one side not to the edge but go back for it and finish it. If that makes sense. For the other comment, I have no problems with these punches. You line up the edge of the paper to the edge of the image of the punch lines on one side or the other, punch, then you line up the first punch with the imaged punch on either side to continue punching. Makng sure that the straight, uncut edge is flat against the inside of the punch before punching down.
