Good strong torch
Bomb proof with a 10 year warranty with the 6 d cells loaded this is a good torch and a home defence tool a bit of a beast really all rolled into one

It lights up my life
Purchased as primarily a home protection device and secondly a torch. So it would make sense to me to split the review in two. Firstly the torch: takes 6 D-cell batteries which makes it quite weighty. Not for the weak armed. The light is pretty good though, with adjustable focused beam of spread over more of an area. Does the job for poking around in the attic where the baddies might be. Part two: home protection device. This thing as mentioned about really goes weight a good whack, must be a good couple of kilos. I keep it next to my bed in the hopes should an intruder make his way into my fort, with the help of this torch I should be able to defend myself should the need for combat arise. Plus, the light is fairly bright so before they get near you a good whack of brightness could disorient the hazard, shortly followed by a stern thrashing with the baton. All in all, I feel safe in my bed with this next to me, and if I really do need to go in the loft I won't be as afraid. Would buy again. Might buy again to dual wield. Not sure yet.

Mine's a footlong
The Maglite 3D torch gives a very satisfying feel, due to its 12" length and wide diameter, knurled barrel, solid build, and hefty half-kilo weight. It is made from anodised aluminium which makes it strong and resistant to corrosion. The torch comes with a bulb fitted, and a spare in the end cap. The end cap unscrews to allow you to insert the batteries, and rubber O-rings are used to keep moisture out. The front end twists to change the focus of the beam, as with virtually all cylinder Maglites. They describe this as being from "spot" to "flood", but calling the wide beam "flood" is a massive exaggeration. The wide beam also suffers from the classic "dark spot" - a shadow cast by the incandescent bulb. If even light is important to you, buy a multibulb or LED torch. The Maglite is good enough for most jobs but even with the supplied bulb and new, decent batteries the light quality is poor enough to lose one star. The switch is a rubber covered push-click type contact, which can be on or off, or half pressed for intermittent signalling. This is by no means the best torch I have ever seen, but it is suitable for most situations I find myself in. And it can sure take a beating! Whatever you do, DO NOT attempt to use Uniross D Converters for this torch - it simply doesn't work. The contact in the bottom of the torch is a spring and the smallest loop of that spring is bigger than the contact on the foot of an AA battery. There is not enough space to use a coin as a contact plate. Use real D-sized batteries instead, such as Duracell Plus .

This is probably the best torch I have ever owned
This is probably the best torch I have ever owned. Having previously owned several other models of the Maglite I decided it was time to purchase the big daddy 6D. I use this torch for camping and walking mainly but also serves general purpose jobs around the house and garden. It is very bright and the adjustable beam is great as the torch can spread light or focus a beam. It's a strong and rugged torch so don't be afraid to use it and knock it around a little as it's built to last. The 6D batteries can be expensive but I have found that using a more expensive Duracell Ultra lasts quite a while in my experience. The bulbs for this torch are replaceable and a spare usually comes in the removable end on the rear of the torch however I have never needed to change the bulb in any of my Maglites. Owned for : 16 months + Used for : Camping/hiking/household jobs Battery life : Over 5 months (dependant on usage) My torch is used and often gets dropped or banged against things, nothing has ever broken on this torch is built to last.

Disappointing.... Overpriced
Both the beam and the spread of light is VERY disappointing.. The build quality is nice but not worth the very long delivery time or the money... Will be the LAST Maglight I buy.....

Maglite 2D incandescent
Bought this to replace my last Maglite purchased over 20 years ago that finally succumbed to corroded batteries. The incandescent bulb supplied in this torch is not great but the build of the torch is absolutely superb. I have given five stars because you can buy this torch and replace the bulb with a 300 lumen LED replacement from The Torch Site (or other sites) for an extra £12 which gives you a torch brighter than the Maglite LED torches which can retail at up to £90. Go for an LED upgrade and this is a briiliant, robust torch. And it's also quite heavy so can be used as self-defence tool if needed. This torch can be dropped, thrown driven over and it still works. I cannot recommend this highly enough.
