FUSED CIGAR LIGHTER PLUG - 8A , 12V

Good product, but some skills needed.
I bought this to replace a damaged item that came with an emergency strip light. As others have said, it has a 5 amp fuse, not 8 as advertised. Externally, it's a smart looking product with a red LED indicator light. Internally, connections are made using a soldering iron-I used an 18 watt Antex, as there are no screw connections. I found it easier to desolder the internal LED, attach my own wires to the LED wires and resolder both onto the internal connections as I needed the plug to supply the strip light and two crocodile clips that came as an alternative connection with the strip light. All of this was a tight fit (see photo), and needed a cable tie to act as a cable restraint. The tip of the plug is the positive connection. As long as you are aware of the skills necessary, it should be a good buy.

Not bad, stay within specs.
Not a bad product for the price, can be a bit finicky to get your wires soldered in (the LED wiring makes this tricky) and the strain-relief boot is only good for maybe 5mm diameter. But be careful, this plug is rated up to 8A, DO NOT EXCEED THIS. I did (fitted a 10A fuse), the internal spring melted and the plug scolded to the touch after being in use for around 30mins. Nothing bad about the product, just stay within the specs.

comes with cut flex
I was hoping i would be able to open this up aninsert the ends of the flex from my applicance, but this has been cut off something leaving about 15cm of flex hanging out whcih is soldered inside the plug, instead of screwed connections like in a house plug. I have soldered the ends of my cable with the ends of this one, but not idea.

very satisfactory device
This is a well-designed robust plug, with the bonus of a red led to indicate the circuit is 'live', but a few words of caution are needed.Firstly (I bought 4) they appear to have a 5 amp, not 8 amp, fuse. Maybe the fuse would take 8 amps, but best not run a fuse above its design current. Usefully, if the fuse blows the light does not show. Essential to know that the fuse is NOT like a house mains plug fuse; it is a 32mm long by 6mm diameter fuse and you need to get some spares ready. Amazon can supply this size of fuse, with different current ratings.Although not shown in the picture, the plug is fitted with a short length of wire. YOu can connect your device to this wire but it may make an unsightly join. It IS possible with care to open the plug and solder internally so your device neatly connects into the plug BUT it needs to be done carefully ! Note that the fitted wire is not held by any kind of gripper inside the plug so beware of pulling on the wire - you will break it away from its soldered connections internally.Having given those warnings I still think this is a good plug.

Fiddly to solder the wires (no holes in the contacts)
You will need a soldering iron for this. I used to do quite a lot of hobby electronics, and am experienced at soldering, but on this item, the contacts don't contain any holes to take the wires, and that makes soldering very fiddly. You do need to take the contacts out of the plastic housing to do the soldering (otherwise you are going to melt the housing), but it's then very fiddly to keep the contact and the wire physically stable enough to get a sound joint -- especially when the contact also has a resistor or LED lead, which is already soldered to it, but desperate to spring back and un-solder itself! I needed several attempts, and I'm not totally pleased with the stability of the result. Really, a hole in the contacts to poke the wires through would make all the difference!

No wiring terminals inside this plug
No wiring terminals inside this plug. This plug has no screw terminals within it for connecting wiring. Nor does it have solder lugs either. In fact it has no provision whatsoever for connecting an outgoing cable. About The Best I Coul Find
I searched for a decent quality socket for a while, there just isn't anything out there. This one is fair quality, what I didn't like about it was it came with a length of wire hard wired into the socket, the wire was not really very good quality, a bit thin. When I say hard wired I mean it was hard wired into the grip, I had to unsolder the cable and drill out the grip to take a decent sized cable. Once I had done this and soldered in the new wire the socket is fine, I bought a second one to make up another lead that l need. Arrived quickly so all in all not to bad

A bit fiddly to connect (soldered) wires. Neither the cable entry grommet nor the casing have any means of making the cable captive so apart from tying a knot in the wires or devising an alternative, all the strain is taken by the soldered joints. Otherwise this plug does the job, just make sure the polarity is correct if necessary when soldering to the +/- .
