Good solid handle for Mattock Head
Good solid handle, bought together with a mattock head from the same supplier. Handle appeared untreated so I gave it a coat of boiled linseed oil before fitting the head. After fitting and tapping it on a concrete floor a few times to settle the head in place I then soaked the business end in a bath of linseed oil to swell the wood and ensure a tight fit. Good product at an excellent price.

Nice quality and easy to fit.
With an old pick-axe handle rotten and riddled with woodworm, but a decent head, a new handle was required. I was surprised that this was available from Amazon but next day delivery brought it to my front door.Despite the decrepit state of my old handle, I conceived an easy way to remove this and to fit the new handle without the need for wedges and screws. Just be careful in handling if you try this and everything is at your own risk. You will need an incinerator, the dustbin type variety. Get a roaring fire in the base and bridge your old pick axe across the top - handle down in the flames. Give it plenty of time to burn out the old handle and to really heat up the pick up head gently. The old handle will drop out and at this point you insert the new handle into the (very hot) head of the pick the correct way around (small end of shaft through top of pick head) so that you can slide the head along the shaft until the taper holds it in place. Making sure the head is pretty secure (don't touch it, it's very hot!) , remove the whole assembly from the fire and bang the thick head of the shaft down on hard ground to make sure that the head is as tight as it can go. Place somewhere safe and let it cool slowly - probably for an hour. The head will naturally contract around the handle and will secure itself if all goes well. Hope that helps - as I say, all at your own risk but it worked for me.
