Gripping and deeply moving; you will devour this novel
This carefully researched work of historical fiction is deeply moving and difficult to put down. In fact, the only thing more challenging than reading through some of the more graphic passages (which detail the endless and unspeakable horrors of life in Auschwitz) is putting the book down for any length of time. While I’ll always return to personal memoirs and nonfiction about the Holocaust, I wholeheartedly believe novels such as this one are profoundly important, especially if they stir a soul which may not otherwise have been reached. This one certainly reached and stirred my own. Wonderful storytelling, written with the utmost respect and care for the immeasurable, catastrophic human suffering upon which the novel is centered. Thank you, Mr. Dunsky! Bravo.

Heartbreaking!
Although a riveting tale, it was heartbreaking too. What the Nazis did to, not only the Jews, but also, other minority groups, is truly monstrous. The book begins with a man whose wife and six children had been gassed on their arrival, inside the extermination camp, Auschwitz-Birkenau. His grief is so great that his body convulses as he wails loudly all night for his murdered family. The man, just days later, throws himself on the camps electrified fence, which instantly kills him. Then a fifteen-year-old boy is found murdered, not by the SS, but by another prisoner. A former Jewish detective in the camp is told to find the killer inside three days, if he fails, he will be executed. And so, a race against time begins. This book gives a vivid description of life inside the notorious extermination camp, and the horrors that took place there. Highly recommended!
