Q: Does the headband swivel on the ear muffs. As I wear a shield also with a headband as well I need to have the headband to the rear of my head

Yes the ear muffs both swivel 360 degrees and slide up and down independently about 2 inches each. I wear them over a face shield without any problems when I am strimming.

Q: It says snr 28db but what is the nrr so i can compare to other makes? how fully do they block birds, traffic, talking, tv, power tools?

They are very effective with power tools. Grinder, slab cutter, hammer drill, big hedge trimmer, strimmer etc. I cant measure the dB reduction, but they are good at dampening the loud, damaging, deafening sound levels I would be exposed to without them. A great buy & reasonable price, easy to use & adjust for fit.

Q: I need noise-cancelling headphones of some description to use in the cinema as I find it far too loud. Would these do the job?

These are ear defenders. Designed to protect your ears from excessive noises like power tools or chainsaw or very loud machines or working beside a loud rock band. I have found them to be very effective. They are not noise cancelling headphones. As for your question about using them in the cinema, they will make it very much more quiet to the point where you won't hear lower volume level sounds.
