The nerf one is the best we have found and my son found it very easy to throw

It’s in cardboard packaging but more like half a box and secured in with plastic ties.

If its old single glass maybe but I dont think you could break modern glass with it unless there is something hard stuck in it like a stone. I have one that we play with at a youth group (teens mostly) and at times they thow it as hard as they can at each other and no one has got damaged yet...

why does it make a sound?

There are small whistles on the sides. These add a sound like that you get in movies for things falling from a great height. Putting a small but of tape over them will stop it.
