does this actually keep you warm?

I think it depends on what you wear under it. I wore it on a 60 degree windy day with just a short sleeve T-shirt underneath and was comfortable. It’s just a thicker flannel, no lining.

Is this model originally oversize?

This shacket is huge. I ordered my usual size and it fit like it was about 2 sizes larger. I returned it.

Is there pockets on the side/hip area?

Just below waistline, about 3 inches over from the side seam - there is an inset type pocket. It is not set in the side seam.

Why are there no welt pockets as notes in the description and pictures?

There are breast pockets in the picture and the description I’m not sure why you thought there was welt pockets. Perhaps you where looking at two different jackets?
