Not for heavy industrial use, but a good value.
This shouldn't be considered a heavy duty commercial tool, but fine for DIY and household use. The castings are rough, especially the press handle. I can understand the situation, to sell at a low price the maker cannot spend money in finishing work. I held the handle in a vise and filed the rough edges, no problem; just a few minutes work. I spent a bit of time cleaning and oiling the press. I oiled the shaft, and put a spot of grease on the contact point of the handle/shaft, and greased the handle pivot bolt. After cycling the press a few dozen times the action smoothed out dramatically. I drilled out the mounting holes to accept a 1/4" bolt, and mounted it on a short piece of board left over from a previous project. I think this will be fine for the relatively light use I have for it - mainly putting grommets in various tarps. The included grommets seem especially light duty, very thin and cheap, perhaps best used in very light applications. A good value for the money, especially after a bit of smoothing and tuning.

No instructions on how to use this item
A major criticism of this product is that there are no instructions on how to use it. You have to figure that out for yourself.I also ordered the hole punching dies with this hand press and they work fine after I took 3 or 4 days to figure out that I had to unscrew the front bottom screw so that the die goes all the way in. The hole punching dies work beautifully on medium duty tarps (7 mil).As far as the grommet installing dies are concerned, the machine accommodates grommets up to 3/8 inch okay. However, it has a major problem with 1/2 inch grommets. They just wind up being bent out of shape so I continued to install 1/2 inch grommets in tarps by hand with a mallet. Also, as far as the hand press itself, I had to use a rasp to file down the leftover metal residue on the handle left over from the casting process so I wouldn't cut myself. The machine works but obviously quality control was not a concern of the manufacturer. This is a so-so product that is only worth it if you have a lot of small grommets to install. Not recommended for any grommets larger than 3/8 inch even though it is advertised to accommodate 1/2 inch grommets. It is made of cast iron so it is quite sturdy but it is poorly constructed. You risk injury to your hand if you do not use a rasp to file off the residue from the casting process on the handle. You have to mount it in order to use it on either a work bench or a board that you can clamp down to a table or bench.

Came with slight damage, but provider made it good.
When product arrived there was a bent screw. It didn't affect the machine's use, but I reported it to the supplier. The offer they made to make up for the slight damage was more than fair. Too fair; unfair to them, so I refused their generous offer. I would buy from them any time. In fact, I asked if I could buy cutter/punches to make the hole prior to adding the grommet. I guess those don't exist. This is unfortunate because using the grommet to cut the hole in the material can sometimes damage the grommet.

Not a finely machined product
We printed up directions on use from a posting on the product. We wanted this machine to install grommets in cotton duck material (3 layers) for a porch curtain. We made a few practice grommets - which I would advise - to get the right location and how it would look. After the first couple of grommets we got the hang of it and it went smoothly. The setup came with a pad for the handle and my husband said he was glad it did. Our only complaint is that the die did not cut all the way through the fabric. But I cut an X into the material (not all the way to the edge of the circle) and then the material slipped all the way over the die and seated into the receiving part of the grommet. With three different size dies and grommets, we have come up with several other projects to use this machine.

The machining on the casting is very crude.
Hi, I want to preface this review with the understanding that we have a machine shop here at work and were able to "finish" the casting that was sent. You on the other hand may not have access to tools required to make this thing work. The good news is that the frame seems to be a decent Chinese iron casting with out having any flaws in the actual poured metal. The bad news is that it looks like it was finished with a rock. Things that we needed to do to it included grinding the casting flash from the handle, Truing the bore for the press stroke. Re drilling and tapping the retaining screw the piston rides in and polishing the surfaces on the die.The fit of the handle into the base has a great deal of lateral slop that needs to be taken up with a couple washers and the machine screws included are more or less trash. So finished the machining, minor adjustments to the press geometry, and replacing the pot metal screws for stainless and it works decently for installing grommets in 5 mil plastic laminated paper.

Great Value Grommet Press
Before even trying the press I mounted it to a 12" piece of 2x6" wood to prevent stress on the base. Those reviews showing the base breaking evidently do not understand what the 3 holes in the base are for. After the press was secure and supported I was delighted with the roll on the 1/2 inch grommet! I have not tried the 2 smaller sizes as of this review.

Best way to insert grommets
This really was an excellent purchase. I have tried many other methods and equipment for grommets and this is the best. It produces high quality results. I wish I had bought it a lot sooner. Thank you for a great product.

Mal embalado el producto, raspado
Hasta ayer recibí mi producto, llegó bastante raspado de pintura en algunas partes. La presión para colocar ojales es muy normal

Suggest anchoring it
Due to the shortness of the base, I would recommend that you anchor it to a work surface or something heavy to hold it securely. When I first used it, it went for a cartwheel because of the short base. I was used to my other rivet press that has a longer base. The grommets that came with it are a bit flimsy but work fine enough.

It works well
Did not know I needed a die to cut the fabric hole but I made do

Setting Grommets
I was able to quickly and easily assemble the unit (although I already have a Rivet Press) so familiar with how they work. It does have a sharp-edged spring end that I covered for safety.First time using, the grommet was set easily and without any fuss. At first glance, the grommets seem thin and a bit flimsy, however they seem sufficient when set in 2 layers of upholstery / marine vinyl. Now I just need to get the hole punch die set that goes with.
