Chuck D is the only one who could write this book! A must read if you like music and the truth.

Very informative history of Hip-Hop for an old school fan like me but also an essential chapter in Black culture for those who love Hip-Hop today. While I am not a fan of most of the hip-hop that came out after 2000 I support the art if it still can be used to awaken the social conscience of our society. Chuck D will always be a hero to me along with KRS1.

Some awesome knowledge is here that I didn’t know. Plus it’s cool to grab it and look to see what happened this month in 1987 or whatever year you choose.

My only complaint is I wish it didn't look like a textbook on my shelf. Has plenty of information that I never knew about...or had long forgotten. A great guide to keeping up with specific dates regarding hip-hop music releases.

Ich selbst kann mit Hiphop und Rap nichts anfangen. Echt gar nichts. Public Enemy, Run DMC, LL Cool J, Beastie Boys und natürlich auch die Fat Boys waren zwar Begleiter meiner Jugend aber so richtig warm geworden bin ich damit nie. Dann hab ich letztens was von nem Typ namens Eminem gehört, das fand ich ganz OK, weil das angenehm aggressiv und gleichzeitig melodisch klang. Das war's. Ich bin mehr so der Rock'n'Roll Typ.Ein Freund von mir ist allerdings -- gelinde gesagt -- Hiphop-Fanatiker. Er nahm mich vor ein paar Jahren mit zu PE in Berlin und schleuste mich letztes Jahr mit auf das Berliner Konzert der Prophets of Rage (Ja, beides mit Chuck D.!). Konvertiert bin ich trotzdem nicht. Dann stand der Geburtstag dieses besagten Freundes an und ich suchte nach einem passenden Geschenk. Irgendwas mit "Hiphop" sollte es sein. Als ich dieses Buch sah, war die Suche sofort beendet. Die Schlagwörter "Von Chuck D" und "Hip-Hop History" reichten mir aus, um zu wissen, dass dies nicht mehr zu toppen wäre. Bei der Übergabe war er erstmal sprachlos, dann hat er sich gefreut wie ein kleines Kind das den Weihnachtsmann auf dem Osterhasen reiten sieht. War offenbar ein Erfolg.Zum Buch selbst kann ich nichts weiter sagen, ausser das es groß und schwer ist, viele Seiten hat und viele, viele Namen und Titel enthält, die mir völlig unbekannt sind. Für Fans des Genre wahrscheinlich jetzt schon eine Art Bibel.

Un superbe livre rédigé par une légende du Hip-Hop. Il est agrémenté d'illustrations d'artistes contemporains du street art reconnus comme Shepard Fairey (OBEY) etc. Toutefois, la raison pour laquelle je ne mets pas 5 étoiles: Il aurait été mieux conçu s'il avait été rédigé jour par jour (c'est comme ça que je le pensais lorsque j'ai lu la couverture) et non par année. Imaginons: nous sommes le 1er mars, on ouvre à "1er mars" et on voit tout ce qui s'est passé les 1er mars dans l'histoire du Hip-Hop. Alors oui, parfois il y a des jours où il n'y a rien, mais pas grave: le jour d'avant ou d'après il y a sûrement des choses à lire! Cela permettrait de le garder comme un almanach. Là, on doit regarder an après an… et chercher un jour précis en feuilletant tout le truc si jamais on ne trouve pas le jour en question... faut avoir du temps!Mais bon, il n'a pas été conçu ainsi, ce sera peut-être le rôle du prochain de Chuck D!

Nice book, Chuck did a great job chronicling hip hop record history. Covers release dates, producers and sometimes the background and or impact of record/singles. It might not be not something you want to read in one sitting as there’s a lot of info to digest.Aside from failing to reference the original lyrical king T La Rock, it’s pretty thorough in chronicling the music part of the culture. Any big hip hop fan will enjoy it.

An excellent account of the History of Hip Hop, the artists and personalities at the heart of the culture and the music that it revolves around. Chuck's works in all genres are informative, well written, well researched and relevant. He has curated an enormous amount of art as part of this work that sets a standard in Hip Hop, the music industry as a whole that propels the movement forward while also reflecting its past. I keep this book in my classroom as a resource and students love it. It's been used as a resource for projects as well as simply admired and read for pleasure by students even students who have previously not been interested in Hip Hop. A wonderful learning resource and a great read.
