You can use Veneering Cement Refractory Mortar to fill gaps

Q: Does this material need to be coated with any refractory coating before use?

No need for any coating. you just cut it to the size you need with a razor knife. And install. I use this to insulate my wood boilet doors. The bottom chamber gets up to 2000 degrees. No problems yet.

Q: Can you place a stove pipe thru this material and not burn any surrounding areas? I.e. A window.

It can withstand direct flame up to 2300 degree F. And its melting point is 3200 degree F.

Q: can this material be cut to size, to fit as the holding platform for my small forge? Size needed is 6" x 13 1/4"

Yes, I cut mine easily on a table saw. It’s reasonably lightweight
