Three Cups of Tea: One Man's Journey to Change the World... One Child at a Time (Young Reader's Edition)

Great for young readers
I got this book for my sixth grade daughter who was supposed to read a nonfiction book for her school library reading challenge. I had gone to a convocation about that time and listened to Greg Mortensen talk about his experiences. I read Three Cups of Tea a few years ago and loved it. When I was reviewing my book I noticed in the back of the book that there was a young readers edition. This is my daughter's review of the book...I really loved the book. It wasn't ever boring. I liked the question and answer part the best and I liked the pictures. I think that all 5th and 6th graders should read it. It really shows how one person can change the world a little bit at a time. Amira told her father's story in language I could understand. She showed me that everyone, even those we may be at war with, are people like me and they have hopes and dreams.

Great for ESL Students, too
I ordered this for my adult English-as-a-Second-Language students, and it's been very successful. It's the same inspiring, riveting story as the original, but the language is simpler and the story is shortened and made appropriate for middle-schoolers--i.e., less scary, no sexual content, and less political complexity. My ESL students could obviously handle the adult content, but they can't handle the vocabulary and grammatical structures in the original, so this Young Readers' Edition has been a good choice. It includes the maps and nearly all the wonderful photographs of the original, and has some useful additions, like a glossary, time line, a who's who list, and a surprisingly candid interview with Greg Mortenson's then-12-year-old daughter. I should add that though simplified, the vocabulary--designed for native-speaker preteens--is still pretty challenging for even intermediate ESL learners. But it's not overwhelming, and in any case is outweighed by the power of Mortenson's story, and by the universal relevance of his message of education and peace.

Three Cups of Tea
I was looking for a book that could teach me about customs and conditions in other cultures. Greg Mortenson, the author presented an amazing story of what one person can accomplish with passion and committment as a result of a promise made and how his promise to help build a school in Pakistan, ultimately influenced the lives of so many children who otherwise would not have had the opportuntity to be educated.Would like to recommend his second book "Schools from Stones" which helps to complete the cycle by introducing the first graduates of his schools and how they go on to change the world and give back to the people who educated them.A beautiful story that makes one believe that we can relate to people of every culture person to person. Should be required reading for every child in American because there are children's versions of the books as well.

For advanced ESL students
My student is a 14-year-old girl living in suburban Japan. Her English comprehension is far above her grade level. She read a chapter at home and we'd discuss it in our private "book club" twice a week. The Young Reader's edition was a perfect level match for her. Three Cups of Tea also has a glossary in the back to explain vocabulary from the local culture. She enjoyed this honest, positive, moving look into the villages of North Pakistan. The foreword by Jane Goodall, photographs, and interview with Greg's daughter Amira really brought it all together. My student liked hearing this story from the perspective of a girl her own age. I'm looking forward to more books like this for our lessons!

Community service can be here or anywhere
This middle school version of 3 Cups of Tea is a welcome book for this age group. With a growing emphasis on community service, this book can show students how one person can make a difference while learning about and understanding another culture. This book just reinforces the fact that we all want the same things for our children. Because this part of the world is so much in the news right now, this is a nice tie in to the Afghan war and the plight of its people. This book also could serve as a catalyst for discussion about that part of the world, Islam, education for girls and how Mortensen's efforts translate to local community service projects.

Inspiring story for all ages.
I was given a copy of the audio book Three Cups of Tea recently. On a 3 1/2 hour trip I was able to listen to the whole story and what a story it was. There were so many people I could think of that I wanted to share this great tale with that I immediately went out to order it for gifts. I found many versions and little did I know....I had been given the "young readers" edition... The introduction by Jane Goodall was reason enough to order this exact same edition for my gifts even for the most sophisticated of recipients. Simply told, a wonderful true story.

read it
If you have not read the adult version of three cups of tea, i highly recommend it ... this is just a wonderful story ... a testament to one man's humanity and what we can all accomplish when we respect one another and persistently pursue a goal. It is read by Pentagon staff now and counterintelligience teams....it is a testimony to the fact that every human being wants acknowledgement and respect .. such small things but they are truly the stepping off points for so much more. Read it, let your kids and grandkids read it .. please.

A difficult book to read
I first tried the "adult" version but found it difficult to wade though. This version is a little better. It is really a memroire but is written in the third person. It seemed to me that it was a man patting himself on the back for all the schools he was building. While I applaud what he did, I did not enjoy this book. The best part of the whole thing was the interview with his ten-year-old daughter at the end. I only finished it because it was our bookclub book for the month.

eye opener
i was recommended this book by a friend. And I must say I am amazed and somewhat ashamed that I did not know of Greg Mortenson or the CAI until this book. What an amazing man and his wonderful family. how someone can be so selfless is beyond my comprehension. I am inspired to do better things with my life and give back some of what God has given me even if it is miniscule in comparison to this great man, InshaAllah!
