Gorky and social realism
I purchased this book for an online reading group. I found it a tedious, slow, preaching novel. It felt as if I were reading theater which it is not.Even though Gorky was considered a good writer by Chehov and Tolstoy I find this book lacking in atmosphere, round characters and more literary value than the social proposition of how the masses will attain power. The theme, for our times, seems dated. In my opinion, not a memorable book.

HORRID TRANSLATION
Who in the world did this Kindle translation. It is absurd. Did anyone even bother to edit the person doing the translating. DISGRACEFUL. I want my money back.

Essential Read
The book beautifully captures the struggles and victories of Pelageya as she takes on the challenges of her time. The author's writing is compelling, drawing readers into the heart of the characters and the turbulent era they live in.

the title says it
I found this, as I find all well written Russian novels that I read, an excellent account of the lives of a peoples constant struggle. In this case, the reader will find, clearly presented, the need of the common Russians that brought about the Communist era. Of course, how it played out, is another story.
