Fun build, with nice detail to it
This proved to be a fun build, with some really nice detail to it. The build is split over 3 bags, with each bag containing the pieces for one of the three minifigs and some sections of the mech. There is Lego Plus support for the build if you prefer to use the App, but I’m old school and worked my way through the print manual. All three of the minifigs have printing on both front and back of their tops (although Tony Stark’s is less impressive than Viper/The Watcher’s – just a little bit of wrinkling to his shirt on the back). Both Viper and The Watcher have fabric cloak elements as well as their plastic parts. The assembled mech is great – not just in its colourful looks, but in the amount of articulation it has, including jointed legs, feet, and arms, and even opposable thumbs. The feet are large and solid enough that this is completely self-supporting when standing and not prone to toppling over. Most of the patterned detail to the mech suit is gained through decals, but the face design on the domed helmet piece is printed. I’m glad of that as decals around a dome are a horror to try and apply without wrinkles in them. I haven’t done the alternate build car yet – will leave the mech up for a few days before I get to that – but glancing through the build instructions it looks as though it’s not a complete disassembly job, but largely a case of moving round pre-built chunks.

What If LEGO made another mech..?
LEGO love a good mech and have released a number of sets based around large stompy robots or exosuits from various franchises. Although they do link to the source material, often the sets appear to just be a means of re-using an existing design and tweaking it for Spider-Man or whoever. The Sakaarian Iron Man set dsoes break this trend a little bit, as although the mech design is very familiar to even previous Iron Man-based suits, it does at least feature in the What If..? Disney+ show (albeit briefly). The suit itself is appropriately chunky and a good representation of its on-screen counterpart. A minifigure fits inside nicely and the chunky design means that the mech stands up really well whilst still being articulated enough for good play value. The build is a little bit fiddly in places for younger hands, mainly around the various joints, but with a little help it isn't difficult and the robust nature of the mech means it stands up to action-packed play very well. Aside from the mech, three minifugures are included: Tony Stark, Valkyrie and The Watcher. Each is nicely detailed and they look good. A few more accessories would have been nice as £30 feels like a lot for what the set is, but then it's not a surprising pricepoint in the LEGO Marvel range. The inclusion of an alternative model is a nice addition and something I hope LEGO continue to develop. The race car included in this set is OK, not great but it does increase the value of the whole thing aside from what you can obviously create yourself with some imagination. This is an easy purchase if you are a huge Marvel and/or What If..? fan and you don't have too many mechs already. It looks faithful to the original, is well designed and you get three good minifigures included. Recommended.
