Red Soil in My Eyes

Red soil and jazz
I purchased "Red Soil in My Eyes" a couple of years after Somi's second album, "If the Rains Come First." Over all, I think "Red Soil" is a better album, but they're really two very different approaches to contemporary "world-beat" music. Somi's second album is smooth Afro-pop, in the tradition of Sade -- though with a very different voice, effortlessly light and gentle. "Red Soil" is more Afro-jazz, with Somi's offering more commanding vocals here, and some improvisation. In addition to the title track, I particularly liked "Ingele," "My Mother's Daughter," and the wonderful "Losing You." Somi appeals to two different audiences equally well, and I recommend both albums.

A Sleeper
If you want to hear an extradonarily gifted singer with great material and wonderful emotion, this is it. I'm shocked that there are so few reviews of this CD. Somi is phenomenally talented and the musicians are great, too.The songs generally have a nice, warm, jazzy feeling to them. About one-half of the songs are in English and the other half are in her native language. I typically prefer to listen only to songs in English because I want to understand the lyrics, but Somi sounds so good that it doesn't matter.Hurry and get your ears on this CD.

Here In Ohio..Listening
I originally heard the song, "Ingele", and immediately wanted to purchase the single. However, I was taken enough with some of her other songs that I decided to purchase the entire cd.The artist has a smooth, jazzy style of singing that won't diasppoint. Enjoy!

Appeasing jazz creations with heartfelt vocals
Somi's second album "Red Soil In My Eyes" has a very acoustic jazz feel to it, making it very pleasant on the ears and subtle. The arrangements are quite varied and mostly very endearing, enabling the listener to forget about their worries and drift off into Somi's world for an hour."Ingele" is a very suave and seductive jazz song with African influences. "My Mother's daughter" is more acoustic and uplifting. "Day By Day" has both a jazzy and samba feel to it, but the vocals are a little chaotic at times. "Circles" has beautiful strings throughout the song and is a very captivating mellow jazz tune. "Red Soil In My Eyes" is just as enthralling and creative, with touching vocals. "African Lady" is quite funky and rhythmic with jazzy influences. "Quietly" is the most interesting song with dark Arabic arrangements and a strong melody. "Losing You" is a slightly more fast paced track with a heavy beat combined with soft vocals. "Mbabazi" is a very uplifting and catchy African influenced song with lovely vocal harmonies. The final track "Natural" is a sweet acoustic guitar led ballad and is followed by "Remembrance" 2 minutes later which is a sombre and gentle African influenced song."Red Soil In My Eyes" is a very peaceful and calm album which allows the listener to discover new sounds in songs that are very understated and mesmerising. Somi has managed to create an atmospheric album focussed on jazz arrangements with African influences. Very effective.
