essential for trainnee teachers
without a doubt this book is a must for those teaching maths in the primary school. I am in my 2nd year of trainning and found that i used this book in all of my research and most of my essays to do with children learning maths. It is very clearly laid out with sections dealing with each aspect of primary maths. It is concise in its explainations and i feel it is a book i will be using even when in the classroom - something that you can't say about every text book bought for university! certainly worth it.

A happy reader.
I was recommended this book by the Maths department at my University for trainee teaching. I bought the older version and I wasn't too keen on it. Now a teacher, I am finding this book much better for subject knowledge and pedagogy. However, I always find that Haylock misses out on some topics, and glosses over on some other topics that I may need to teach in depth.

Aimed at teachers, but brilliant for parents as well
This is a brilliant book.It is aimed at teachers looking to deepen their understanding of maths, but is just as useful for parents who are unfamiliar with modern words and styles used in their children's school work. The book explains every topic in primary maths but, importantly, also how to explain it to others. Each topic shows several examples and also more than one way to explain each time. The main point (and it's greatest strength) is that it teaches the 'teacher' or reader each topic independently - It teaches you the topic from scratch, not just how to explain something, to others, that you already know. For example, say that a teacher or parent doesn't have a deep understanding of how to work out percentage reductions. You can go straight to the percentages section in chapter 5, say, and have it explained in language that only assumes that you are moderately itelligent and able to learn - without needing to understand everything in chapters 1-4 first, or much about maths at all really.

Currently studying PGCE Primary and I have found this book to be very useful for subject knowledge enhancement. It explains mathematical concepts very well as well as common misconceptions which helped me to grasp a solid understanding on it and as a result I could then go off to explain difficult concepts to a year 4 class which I had taught.
