Distressed leather covers this Dr. Martens classic for an imperfect finish. Dr. Martens is the stuff of legends. It all began near Munich, Germany in 1945 when Dr. Klaus Maertens injured his foot in a skiing accident in the Bavarian Alps. To make walking easier during the healing process, he designed a shoe with an air-cushioned sole. Using old rubber tires, he constructed soles that had air trapped within closed compartments. He showed his prototype to his engineer/inventor friend, Dr. Herbert Funck, and together they decided to develop and produce the shoes. Not only did the shoe solve the doctor's immediate problem, but it also started to sell well in Germany. By 1959 the two decided that they needed a company to produce and distribute the shoes, then called Dr. Maertens, in other parts of the world. At first, many manufacturers rejected the concept of an air cushioned sole as a short-lived gimmick. However, the R. Griggs Group, located in the village of Wollaston in England, decided to go along with the idea by creating the first work boot with the revolutionary sole. On the first of April 1960, the first cherry red eight-eyelet work boot was produced and named 1460. To sell the brand name better in England, the name was anglicized to Dr. Martens. The range was branded AirWair and the rest is history.

Great boot - wish they came in half sizes
I usually wear an 11.5. Based upon prior reviews that these ran large, I ordered a US 11, which was too small, especially in the width, instep and toe area. Replaced with a US 12 which fits much better, although just a bit too large. Seems like a big jump from the 11 to the 12 - not sure how consistent their sizes run. Like with many leather products, there was a significant difference in the overall appearance of the two pairs I tried - the 12s that I am keeping have much more color variation and "character" (more like the photo), whereas the first pair was more of a uniform dark brown (I recognize that the distressed look would come with age/use). These appear to be sturdy and well made - hope they last (I had a previous pair of Docs several years ago and the sole separated prematurely). They look great and are breaking in quickly - very comfortable thus far. Overall, I'm very pleased.

Excellent boots
I have been wearing these boots since the day I got them. The leather really changes and grows with the boots through wear and tear and pronounces the capo toe in a really nice way. The fit well and as expected as I typically buy size 19.5 however since these were boots I bought size 10. The look great, feel great, and have decent tread to get through snowy/slippery days. I have a few concerns, the laces are really thin and I am afraid they will have a short lifespan. The boots aren't particularly warm, and unless they are tied extremely tight, the top of the boot rubbing against a leg can be slightly uncomfortable. All in all I really like these boots, worth the money.

Looks Great, But Sole Falls Apart
The boot looks great and feels comfortable too. However, the heel portion of the sole is glued and not stitched as with the front portion. The heel has fallen off from each boot. Really disappointed that it is not stitched.

Fantastic!! Very well done Dr. Martens!
What a great surprise. The last time I remember ever looking in Dr. Martens direction was 15 years ago when I thought they made mostly the lacquer shiny hipster-style shoes. Since then I never even considered them as an option only until recently when I happened to see these good looking items in store. Gave it a try and finally well done military/urban-style high boots yet not oversized toe-box that I don't need to put in a pad to fill the gap between the toes to the ceiling! Even Timberland (who were my favorite till they changed their sizing) forgot the art of making well constructed and COMFORTABLE fit shoes. Plus - these came true to size! So rare lately! I have ordered in the past few months at least 8 or 9 different pairs of shoes from various different manufacturers and eventually had to return them all since NONE of them was true to size. I don't know what the heck happened to shoes industry that all standards are gone, but obviously Dr Martens are of the few that seem to still master the art of ergonomics. I'm a believer! I truly hope they will keep this line consistent for years to come.

second time all is good
first pair I received was defective, cap toe was uneven. sent them back and was replaced in a few days. second pair are perfect.yes the chinese dr martens are 'cheaper' than the UK made. the hooks at the top are chinsy, the leather is thin and rigid. However the boots are great and stylish. the size is as expected (a bit large) but not enough to complain about. I would not reccomend this boot as an everyday roadwork boot. but as a stylish make a statement, they are great.buy em and dont compromise, if they arent perfect send em back, china has no quality control standards.

Most uncomfortable Doc Martens EVER!
Take this as a warning. These boots suck! Not just as Doc Martens but simply as boots. I own a couple pairs of Docs and love them. I decided to get these for the aggressive tread. I figured they'd be just as comfortable as the others. I was very wrong.First putting them on for some reason is a fight. Takes great effort to my feet past the top. (Yes with the laces loose.)Then they fit loose when I get them in. These are the same size as my others and they fit perfect, so it's not a size issue. The leather is hard and unforgiving and the insole makes my feet sweat. As in other reviews, the tongue migrates far to the outside of each boot. I tried to correct this but they have now broken in that way.I have a lot to complain about but I'm wearing them every day. They are breaking in, and are getting a little better. But overall they still suck. Oh but the treads are really good.

Too Stiff
The Gideon Boot by Dr Martens looks amazing! Stylish and rugged. The sole is tough, durable and holds its ground very well. I wear a size 9 1/2 US Mens and ordered a size 8 UK / 9 US mens. Fits my foot beautifully. The Black is actually a dark brown, don't be fooled. The outside is a nice leather stitched to a very durable man made product on the inside. This man made material is very very very stiff. Although I did put mink oil on the leather, the boot doesn't bend like it should and the designers could do well to put a couple of notches in the boot after the 6 inch high mark and make this boot flex. It could also use a little padding on the top, as this is so stiff that it wears off my skin...so be sure to wear tall socks. I can only lace the boot up the original 6 eyelits otherwise I can't bend my ankle forwards or backwards at all. I had much higher hopes for these boots.

Doc's for 2013
I haven't owned a pair of Doc Martin boots since the 90's. I was looking for a some boots for the fall that processed a urban/rocker kind of look. These boots appealed to me because they had a rugged look and didn't have the bright yellow stitching related to Doc's.After breaking them in for a few weeks they have become very comfortable. I usually wear a 10 1/2 shoe, so I ordered a size 10.If I had a any complaints it would be the tongue of the show does not stay straight and kinda pushes to the side. Also, if you don't have them laced up all the way there is a slight clanging sound when you walk from the metal loops.Well, I've been wearing them everywhere and recommend them. They go for $159 in the store, so Amazon's price is pretty good.
