This collection brings together some of the best directors and actors in 10 spine tingling tales of hard-boiled detectives, seductive women, mistaken identity and suspense, in the best tradition of Film Noir! Films: DOA, Beat the Devil, Impact, The Stranger, Scarlet Street, Shock, Port of New York, They Made Me A Criminal, Whirlpool, Quicksand. (all B&W) Review: Good movies - We have watched several of these movies and they are really good stories. Unfortunately no subtitles, and they are old movies so don't expect today's video quality. Review: 10 quality films, wow! - The transfer is really not bad, unlike a lot of bulk film packages. I found each and every one of these movies to be quality pictures. Great performances by super actors and directors like Humphrey Bogart and John Houston and Orson Welles and Edward G Robinson. One of the best movie bargains I’ve ever seen.

What Is Film Noir?
There are some very good movies with top tier talent on this two disc set containing 10 movies (5 movies per disc), therefore the viewer can settle in and watch several movies without having to get up and change DVD's. However, with 5 movies per disc this means there is no space left on the disc where the viewer can [push the menu button] and then find a given scene in a movie. Because of this, if the viewer loses track of where they are in a movie and needs to go back to a given scene this lack of a scene library makes it difficult to get to the place in the movie they want to be. At the beginning of each disc there is a statement to the affect that these movies were remastered but that there will still be some imperfections. In fact the video and audio quality varies from one movie to another although I think the viewer will be satisfied with the overall video and audio quality and several of the movies are of a very good quality bordering on HD. Now then, I realize there will always be a wide ranging point of views on what is and what is not Film Noir. Although I do think that Film Noir fans will agree that the protagonists of this genre are usually well defined characters with good and bad traits, that justice does not always triumph in the end and it is rare for Film Noir to have a "Happily ever after" conclusion. In 8 out of 10 of these movies they have just these kinds of plots where people do the right thing, justice triumphs, evil doers get their just rewards and the primary protagonists live happily ever after. One example of the kinds of movies in this set is They Made Me a Criminal with John Garfield and the Dead End Kids… at this point I think all will agree that any movie with the Dead End kids isn't Film Noir. It is a good movie -- it's just not Film Noir. The only true Film Noir with this set is DOA which is a masterpiece of the genre, and the other movies are good movies -- it's just that they are not Film Noir.

Almost unbelievably cheap for this quantity and quality
An extremely cost-effective (and overall, quite good) ensemble of ten Forties-Fifties crime movies. imdB ratings run from 6.1 to 7.5; overall picture quality runs from "million-dollar matinee" to pretty-OK cleaned up, but no wet-gate or other high-tech special release techniques were used. The most puzzling (though welcome to me) inclusion is 1953's BEAT THE DEVIL, which is in no sense a "noir" but more of a screwball-ish caper comedy that became something of a cult classic. (Perhaps an available flick with the likes of Humphrey Bogart, Jennifer Jones, Gina Lollobrigida and Peter Lorre in the cast was irresistible no matter what its specific genre.) Ironically, probably the biggest drawback to this set is that the pretty toleware-type box it comes in helps push the two DVD's together. At this price, though, purchasers can easily budget in a couple of blank jewel boxes to keep the DVD's separate. (Since the discs themselves do not appear to have been manufactured with an on-demand process, they should last quite a while.) Needless to say, a great gift with the understading that while these movies may not be the very best of the Noirs, they're good enough, sometimes more than good enough, to make a worthwhile addition to any film library.

No cover
The shows are good and DVDs look good but this was shown as a new item and was sent with out a dvd cover with the listing of shows. It had plastic wrap over the case. Just a little bummed because I like to read about the show I am watching or any other info

Very pleased with the transferrs and sound, just buy it.
Great collection of the oldie but goodies, for the price hard to go wrong. I know I had in the past paid as much for just one on VHS. I want to say every one is a classic, certainly "The Stranger", "Quicksand", "Beat the Devil", They made Me a Criminal"... maybe all are depending. I am no expert about sound and transfers but I was very happy watching and listening to them on the big screen. By todays standards may be a bit slow paced for the mouse click generation, but if they love film noir, will not disappoint?! I have recently unplugged from the cable and it is these type films I really miss, no CGA or computer graphics, no insane telegraphing every moments next moment or prodigious blood letting posing as film making. Tasteful; can I use that word here in this context? OK, so my review is biased as I already love this stuff so all I can reasonably add is that I was happy with the extras and I was happy with the production values in getting these on a disk for me to enjoy.

Great selection, good quailty reproductions
This is a very diverse collection of wonderful films. Some of the photography are little masterpieces of black and white films. A couple are not top quality reproductions but there is no problem enjoying them and they are still very acceptable. After watching them all I started looking for more film noir. I wish the collection was twice as long.

This is a very good set - great value
This is a very good set - great value. I have no issue with the picture quality of this set playing on a 4k high end Qled Samsung tv/blueray they play great. I see no difference with the picture quality on some of these movies that are shown on TCM. Not all movies are restored to crisp white and blacks because they were never that way to start with.

Cheap price, cheap quality. Not terrible
Less than stellar transfer quality. The films themselves are in so-so to decent condition, but some won’t load from the main menu, or take forever to load. Some are choppy (DVD media quality, not the film itself). And no chapter breaks. But for the price, you get what you pay for,

Calidad de imagen pésima, parece que las han bajado de Youtube y las han metido en un dvd. Y ni subtítulos ni nada.
