This book and the workbook ( or the workbook and the book ) are both invaluable tools if you are trying to lovingly encourage someone towards ending there dependence on substances .I'm a freak about science and well-vetted evidence. The book is exactly what it says... It is evidence-based information to encourage changes that are positive for well-being.If you're not a reader you can find a lot of guiding videos but I'd say get over that and just start reading. Start working the workbook. Minimally look into SMART recoveries website.Anyway , reading and doing the workbook, you have to know it cannot be thought of as an overnight fix. But it is very logical and written for every walk of life to really understand and do the practices.I really attest if you get into the practices and behavioral changes, you will start, at least feeling more self-control. And being in control of yourself is really all you could hope for... BUT you will find that as you do.... you'll reduce your own angst, and in time you'll find the gap closing between you and your addicted loved one... And not closing of the gap maybe enough to cause your loved one to start recognizing they are valuable again.

Truth!
Finally a book that sticks to CURRENT research. I am so tired of hearing about what worked 20, 30 or 40 years ago. There has been so much research into the brain and addiction. This book does a great job explaining how addiction affects the brain and why our loved ones behave the way they do. It offers constructive, real life insight into the difficult life of someone battling addiction. It also offers ways families and friends can be supportive to our loved ones.

Must Have for Learning How to Help Your Person with Addiction Issues.
The workbook does not correlate with the textbook. There is no need to get them both. The textbook goes deeper and is harder to concentrate on. The workbook is just fine on its own. There are Thrive Zoom meetings many nights of the week that use this book as part of the CRAFT methodology hat you will learn in this book . I urge you to find them on Facebook and sign up for the zoom calls!

Best Book For Families With Addiction
I'm the Family Addiction Coach; and every family I help uses this book both in between, and also during coaching sessions. It's rocket fuel for learning. Most everything we believe about addiction and recovery is wrong; and most treatment programs don't work. In addition to the latest evidence-based information, you'll build new skills essential to maintain a loving relationship; communication, and setting boundaries so you can help without losing yourself. Using the Workbook, my families achieve deeper recovery in a shorter time.

One of the best books you can buy for guidance and hope!
This is one of the most helpful books available for those who care about someone who struggles with substance use and mental health challenges. We parents and loved ones can truly go beyond addiction, practicing and imbedding this approach of understanding, listening, compassion, and self-care to create change. We can only control ourselves, but when we do, we have an authentic and loving impact. I'm a mother of two sons who have had bumpy, unique paths into their recovery. I'm also a psychotherapist, author and speaker. My clients and I know that this wise approach works in the best interest of all, offering true hope and help with science-based truth and kindness. There is no one-size-fits all into substances or away from them, and when we parents and loved ones become more consciously kind in our relationships, our beloveds feel safer and can make better choices. Their path into change includes understanding the roots of why they use substances, and finding motivation and commitment turn to something different instead. To be able to heal from their pain, trauma, nightmares, anxiety, and depression they need us to understand them without judging. This book teaches those of us who love them what we can do to support that, and how to be present with them. If you're searching for answers, you'll find a container for them here.

There's nothing like it
I have been working in long term care for addiction and other mental illness. When you work in long term care you cannot effectively help someone without working with the families as well. In my different roles I've worked individually with parents, as well as running support groups. I cannot stress to you enough how difficult it can be for families in these situations. For 16 years I've been doing the best I can to advise, guide and support families through every situation imaginable. Having a workbook like this allows me to follow a curriculum and offer families a way to learn in ways a support group is unable to. I really hope this gets to the people that need it because this is different that anything out there

We cannot speak highly enough of this excellent book!
This review is from one of the forgotten 5 million family members in the UK affected by substance use disorder in their home. Our journey began back in 2008, but if yours is is just beginning, the information in this book is among the best we have found to date. You may not yet have heard of approaches such as CRAFT (Community Reinforcement And Family Training), MI (Motivational Interviewing) and ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy) but these modern, evidence based techniques are all used in the development of this workbook. Better still, these skills are delivered in a simple easy to understand fashion that can be used in the highly stressful situations we find ourselves in.From our experience of getting professional support, the material in the book is a great bench mark for those providing holistic support for those in recovery and their families. This workbook is a great update and practical guide to their previous excellent and widely read “Beyond Addiction”.If you are contemplating setting up a peer support group, or want to update and improve your existing group, this book is an ideal resource. ITC is designed from the ground up for family support, not adapted from a recovery program. The ITC method is broken down into three sections – Understanding, Awareness and Action. This resonates with families and helps us to have more compassion for our loved ones, whilst acknowledging our own difficulties. The action section means we are not “powerless” over our loved one’s recovery. ITC includes ways of positively collaborating and rewarding, which results in improved relationships and recovery outcomes. We have now been providing free support for families since 2016 learning from various organisations and methods. In the last year we have moved over to using the latest ITC approach and it is a really good fit for us and we receive really positive feedback from the families we support. The authors are extremely knowledgeable, high experienced and deliver these evidence-based strategies with true compassion in a user-friendly way.
