Green Angel and Green Witch

Breathtaking
Green Heart is two books in one. The first book is Green Angel, the second is Green Witch. I thought about trying to write this review without separating the two, but that wasn't working. They are two very different stories wrapped up in one another and it's lovely. The first, Green Angel is about Green's journey through loss and grief and finding herself again. She loses her entire family in a horrible, devastating way. She crumbles and has to put herself together again. She feels guilty, regretful and, of course, extremely sad and upset. She has to rebuild her life without those she loved most, but she ends up finding comfort in new people. The neighbor she and her sister stole apples from, the girl from her school that was never really her friend, the boy survivor that stumbles into her life and holds her heart. It's a short story, but incredibly moving and hopeful. The way the story is written leaves much to the imagination, and yet you aren't left trying to figure things out. It's all laid out, waiting for you to read and put together. It's dark and yet there's light that keeps shining through with every page. I absolutely loved it.Green Witch is the continuation of Green Angel and is more about Green finding herself again and finding the reason people fall in love. She's looking for something as she visits the houses of neighbors the village people consider "witches;" those that can look past the ugly and have something to give the world. They help Green as she searches for the boy she fell in love with and the girl that became her friend. With the help of these women, she's able to find out that she's stronger than she thought; she has a special power from within herself that people wish they could have. They turn to her for help and to help them find hope again.Green Witch is another story of a journey, but this one is about finding your strength and who you are. It's about love and what love is worth. Everyone has a different answer for how to measure love and it was beautiful to read how each woman viewed the love they had lost. It was both heartbreaking and empowering.Green Heart is a simply breathtaking book that opens pieces of your soul and makes you feel. It's a book that, while short, has an impact. The lyrical way it was written made it all the better. This is definitely a book people should read if they want something that will leave them feeling uplifted and refreshed.

A love letter to us all
Beautifully written... a song and a poem, heartbreak and healing. The protagonist gives us a promise that hope and beauty can come from Los and pain.

Unique approach to grief, loss & healing
I love Alice Hoffman books. Her writing style always draws me in. This book had a somewhat different style and was a magical realism approach to a post-apocalyptic theme, although it was rich with her typical descriptive passages about nature and emotions. Typically, I am not a fan of themes related to post-apocalyptic anything and was not immediately drawn into it to the extent her books usually grab me. However, it was still beautifully written and delved into the significant impact of loss, grief, love, and how the true reality of situations and others appearances are only as true as the perceptions of the observer.

Good for something escapist and magical
This is written in a slightly different tone than her other novels. Hoffman usually likes to build a specific setting (such as a New England town) for her stories. This is more vague in location (but not really in details). It is slightly dystopian, but not too futuristic. It is very fairy-tale like. This edition is the combination of two different novels. The feel of the novels, as with any book and sequel, are different. This is definitely not one of her best books, but is good for a short little escape. It sort of reminds me of current events, but not too much. I found it very enjoyable a read, but I did not pick it apart too much.

Love Green character
Alice Hoffman is my all time favorite author. She has a way of speaking to the heart and bringing light to lifeโs heartbreaking moments through her words. Her prose feels magical and like poetry at times to me. Her work moves me.

What a wonderful story about the power of Love and the power to heal ourselves
Amazing book! Yes, it is a "Young Adult" book and I haven't been in that age range for about 30 years, but I LOVED this book! I love Alice Hoffman and I thought why not try her YA? I am so glad I read this book. It was so touching and powerful! It reminds us to believe in the power of love. Not just romantic love, but loving and caring for others - friends, neighbors, animals and strangers. Eventually this leads us to learn to love ourselves and heal our own pain. That is what I took away from this book. Love is healing. Loving ourselves is magic. Plain and simple.

Your eyes will be stained a new color.
I just want to say this book is a part of who I am today. I read Green Angel when I was around 15 years old. (Interesting how Green herself transitioned between those ages in both books). I am currently 18. I think I have reread this book maybe 100+ times. It has rewritten the way I think.I have always compared myself to Green. I lost family, blamed myself for practically everything, and even followed self destructive behaviors with my bulimia and self-mutilation. As a poet and an artist, this book captures my love for metaphors and similes along with beautiful personification.Alice Hoffman has changed my life. Taking sadness out of my brain and replacing it with a unlimited patience and hope inside my heart, she has transformed me into a new person. If it wasn't for this author I would be here today. I love this book. I annotated two copies of it. Highly recommended.Simply beautiful.I just found out there was a second book which I devoured in a mere two hours. However, despite

Hypnotic, lyrical story
This story reached out and touched my heart. Its poetry spoke of the love that wove its spell through disaster and recovery, through love lost and love found. If the depths of despair can take you away, the wings of love can carry you forward and onwards into an unknown future. Alice Hoffman weaves words into magical stories, as she always does. Thank you for following your gift of writing that enables you to conjour such visions from your imagination.

Buy this book, read this book, share this book.
I loved this book. It contains the two volumes Green Angel and Green Witch. (These can be bought separately in beautiful hardback editions) I couldn't put it down. I had to share it with friends and family. It's the story of a young woman's survival set in a post disaster world that moves from deep grief and an ash coloured landscape to revival and new growth. The world gets it's colour back and so does Green the heroine. There are lessons on how to live, how to cope, how to care for the land and how to love. I will read it again and again.

Fantastic adult fairy story about love, loss, the adjustments we have to make and acceptance
This story appears to have been written in the aftermath of 9/11 and broaches all the heartbreaking subjects within that devastating time. But, donโt let that put you off! Itโs a wonderfully told adult fairy tale full of beautiful metaphors and sprinkled with magic.
