On Cats is a collection of short stories and poems written by German-American author Charles Bukowski, all of which have something to do with cats. Although Bukowski is often regarded as tough and gnarly, he considered cats to be special creatures—something that I can certainly relate to as well.The cats featured in this book are amusing, touching, resilient, and much more. As Bukowski puts it, "The cat is the beautiful devil." He pays tribute to their abilities as predatory hunters, street-smart scrappers, and resourceful survivors, as well as their positive qualities like providing affection and care for their owners. However, this is not exclusively a cutesy book about cats. The cats featured in this book are shown sneakily stalking their prey, stabbing their claws into Bukowski's typewritten pages as they walk across his work, and defending themselves viciously against the other neighborhood cats.This was the first book that I've read of Bukowski's, and I very much enjoyed it. It's a quick read (it only took me a few days to complete) and it's about my favorite domestic animal. I especially appreciated how similar his cats were to his own personality, almost as if they had attracted each other with a strong magnet. If you appreciate cats (or even if you don't—Bukowski's cats run the full gamut of lovable all the way to loathsome) then you should check this one out.

I too am a cat lover. This book was full of very good writings referring to his cats. Interesting way of looking at life.

I have not read much of Bukowski's work, but when this popped up in my Kindle recommendations, I thought I'd give it a go, and I have to say that this is the most honest, unpretentious work I've seen from him. Mostly poems about cats he had, this collection also has a few humorous sketches and photographs of Bukoswski and his feline family. Bukoswki clearly loved and respected each of his feline companions and appreciated their complexity, integrity, independence and sensibility. Reading the poems about them reveals a lot about our own humanity. I've come back to purchase a hardcover copy for my sister, a fellow cat lover, as a Christmas present. I think this would make a wonderful gift to your literate, feline loving friend or for yourself!

Book itself was in fine condition. I wish it had a cover sleeve as described in the item listing. Otherwise the hard back cover is just blank with no words.

It’s part of a trilogy of books of ‘’On Love” and “On Writing”. I’m currently looking for the other two books. On cats is isn’t a thick book but it visits the feline and human relationship between each other. It’s a great book and very insightful and is seen through the eyes as only Charles Bukowski could see it.

This is the first time I've read Bukowski (don't judge-- my degrees are in a STEM field, I didn't get much of a liberal arts education!). I enjoy his quotes though, so when I saw the Kindle edition of this book on sale, I picked it up. Bukowski's poems & prose have a charming working class intellectual vibe; at times rough, occasionally drunken, yet still deeply philosophical. It is clear he dearly loved his cats, although modern readers of who subscribe to a philosophy of indoor-only cats who are spayed or neutered & pampered may be shocked by some of the trouble his street-wise cats get into. (Most of the poems included were written in the 1960's through 80's. Even just 20 years ago, the way most Americans care for their cats, even beloved & cherished cats, was drastically different from today.) Still, the book is a very enjoyable read for anybody who loves & shares their lives with cats. This is such a fun book, it is populated by photos of Bukowski's cats in between the poems- which are hillarious! I couldn't help but read it before I gave it to my cousin for her birthday. She showed to her cat and read it to her. It was adorable.
