(Alana's Mom) I have truly enjoyed this book. A lot of this was in me, and I simply didn't realize what I was doing. As I continue to acknowledge my conditioning, this is one area I appreciate replacing what I'm unlearning with factual powerful truths. It confirms our continued connection with our ancestors, while validating our strength, beauty, and power. It is the beginning of my education on an entire new way of life. I love that it is written with Black American's specifically in mind. A reconnection to our roots! Thank you for writing this as well as the other books I bought and love. I look forward to learning and doing more!

Layla provides a brief description and some background information on the origin of Hoodoo. She discusses the core beliefs of Hoodoo and it's purpose along with the importance of relating to our ancestors. However, in Chapter 2, Layla discusses more indepth the history of Hoodoo and it's true African origin, and how our enslaved ancestors hid their native religions within their practice of Christianity and eventually the two began to be practiced together to a unique form of spirituality.The author discusses several types of magic and each's belief and working. She further describes the steps in one's preparation for beginning on their journey as a Hoodoo practitioner, from adopting one's form of spiritual belief be it Christianity, Voodoo, Damballa Nago, or one of the many other forms of spirituality. Layla further discusses other steps from setting up your altar, choosing the tools you'll be working with to inviting your ancestral spirits to aid in your working.The chapter dealing with spell-casting and preparing for the spell is full of valuable information. Yes, I know we all want to skip everything and begin casting spells, but we need to go through all the laid out steps Layla outlined in this wonderful book from learning about oils, herbs, candles (to include making your own), and a variety of other tools to use in your craft.This book is packed with a lot of craft information that will aid any beginner in learning Hoodoo very easily. I really enjoyed this book, especially the sections on setting up an altar, cleansing your tools, spell-casting, the invaluable information on the types of candles, making and baptizing your dolls, divination, and beginner's spells.Any beginner, whether starting in Hoodoo or any other form of ritual magic can benefit from the well laid out information in this book. And if the information provided in this book isn't enough, the author provides quite a number of reference materials.

Has some good foundational recipes that you can always put your family and or personal twist on.

This book helped to put so many things into perspective. Coming into spirituality can be overwhelming because we don’t always know where to begin; this book is a great guide encompassing the history, where to begin, and the pros and cons of different types of rootwork. This book gives you a starting place to begin your beautiful journey and confirms that much will be learned along the way. The basics are here. A must read.

I love this book. Very easy to follow and understand. Hoodoo is something that has been pulling at me for years. And it is something I ALWAYS wanted to learn as to connect with my ancestors...love this❤️

From start to finish, this book was amazing. It explained everything very clear, I didn’t get bored once, it didn’t sugar coat anything, and it answered a lot of my questions. If your a beginning practitioner and not sure where to start…. This book is a good starting point .
