WHEN WOMEN WERE DRAGONS
S**D
This is the book you should read if you only read one this year.
Award-winning author Kelly Barnhill bravely investigates wrath, memory, and the tyranny of forced constraints in this urgent and timeless futuristic fiction. When Women Were Dragons explores a world that seeks to limit women’s lives and opportunities, as well as what happens when they unite and occupy the space they are due. This was a sweet tale about the changes we go through to become our true selves, about facing our fears and loving others and ourselves for who we are. I was pleasantly surprised by this book. I was unsure of what to expect before I began, and I’m so happy I got to hear this tale.

Feminist novel
This is a great novel for women and girls to read. It does a wonderful take on every woman's anger against oppression and what could happen if that was tapped and women just left.

When Women Were Dragons
This book is a work of feminist art and needs to be read by everyone. It is so poignant, heartbreaking and uplifting. Ms. Barnhill wrote a love story that is so magical and wonderful. I’m sad that the book ended. I would recommend this book for middle school and up. Given the state of the dystopian world we’re living in, this book gave me hope.

Breathtaking and thought provoking
I was hooked the second I picked it up.A very gentle, thoughtful and piercing look at the patriarchy and its effect on women through history, but with one very important difference. The ability of the oppressed to become dragons.Develops beautifully into a sociological look at how society deals with those who are different.Written in beautiful, fluid, eloquent prose.A joy to read.Far less traumatic than A Handmaid's Tale, but equally thought-provoking.

Not really fantasy
2.3/5I have been tricked. If you change the word dragon for the work suffragette every time it appears in this book, it stops being fantasy and it turns to historical fiction. And it's not a bad book about the feminist uprise of the suffragettes, not a great one either, but as a fantasy book is unsatisfactory.
