Torey Hayden is my favorite author, period.
I've read every book Torey Hayden has written multiple times. Usually she writes about children with elective mutism and the stories are based on real people she helped and her experiences at work. I highly, highly recommend any of her other books. She has an awesome style of writing that sucks you in to the story. This book sucked me right in like all her other books. It tells the story of a couple who kidnaps a kid and gets more than they bargained for. The other story in the book is the boys dysfunctional life and his father's search to find him. I enjoyed the book and even though I was expecting something more dramatic, I liked the ending.

Sad, sad,sad kids!
What a good book about trouble children. I become bothered by our society that allows children to get abused and still live in the same dwelling with the abusers. I know it happens all over the world as though our kids were disposable. Sad pictures of life.

Another story brilliantly told
Another story brillianty told by Torey - I have all of her books and this one is just as remarkable as the others. When will society learn to protect their young like animals in the jungle???

Not what I expected!
I have read all of Tory Hayden's books of real experiences of her teaching challenges with special needs children. Every one of those books are great! This is the first of her novels I have read and I found myself setting the book aside. I did not like the use of bad language as a general way of speech, especially from a youngster. The story line, though reasonably interesting was not enough to keep me interested. I skipped through the book, reading a page here and there and got the jist of the story. I will reread her other real life experiences, but will pass on this novel.

Review
Good story but I prefer your books about you and the work with the children. Although I was happy with the outcome

Disappointing
I've always loved books by Torey Hayden, but this one was a disappointment. But then again Hayden does write better nonfiction than fiction. The book is very dark and depressing. I found it hard to feel any sympathy for the characters, as none of them were very likeable. While the book certainly touches some important subjects in life, I did not enjoy reading it.
