UML For The IT Business Analyst

Serious resource for serious people
An excellent resource on the subject of UML. I was impressed how comprehensive the book is. It covers subjects such as Object Oriented principles, behavioral vs structural modeling, use cases, storyboarding, state transitions, business process modeling, class diagrams, associations, multiplicity, data structure an much more. If you are new to UML you may opt for a more concise introductory resource. I feel this is geared towards a seasoned professionals looking to expand their knowledge base.It would also help if you have some background in relational database concepts. You do not need to be an expert, just the basic knowledge of table structure and relationships. However, I would strongly advise to brush up on Object Oriented principles before you attack the chapters dedicated to these concepts. If you do not, this book will do very little to help you grasp encapsulation / polymorphism / inheritance. In fact, it will seriously confuse you. If you have not done any programming before and feel out of your league, this is not unusual. Many developers with years of experience in procedural programming have struggled to come to terms with Objects.Maybe it is the book's wide scope that makes it feel a bit repetitive. Some parts are clearly overly long and do not emphasize key elements enough. I hope this is a minor inconvenience, far better than not having enough coverage. Of course (as with many such books) the illustrations are horrific. UML is visual in nature. Diagrams should play the main role and not be a backdrop to everything else.

A great structure for the inital phases of a Project
This book really helped me prioritise the sequence of events for the requirements gathering phase. It also confirmed which diagrams should be used with which documentation. I found that it helped organised my thinking, and gave me confidence that I was focusing on the correct diagrams and documentation and the correct stages.I found it an easy read and the case study links together with the text well. Make sure you do the case study examples as you go, then do it again from scratch after you have finished reading to make it all fall into place.A great book that focuses on the initial phases, sometimes getting started is the hardest part. This book really help me with that.Regards

Pretty good
This book is well-laid out and presents the information in a logical way. The case study is also easy to follow and helpful. The only thing I feel is lacking in this book is space for you to try the case study exercises. It would make a smashing workbook!

Excellent
This book does a great job in helping to understand both UML concepts and their application. The hands on case studies are very helpful for learning purposes and the BRS template provided is fantastic. Great investment!

Excellent book
An excellent book for any BA who wishes to use UML. No prior UML knowledge is assumed. Book covers all aspects of UML that is required in business analysis. Throughout the book, the author uses a real life case study. Book is easy to follow and quality is writing is very good. Highly recommended.

Poor UML Book
Disappointing read. Got to page 70 and realised I had not learned a thing about UML. For technical subject matter this book has far too much waffle, a distinct lack of technical information. It may well have improved but my patience stopped me reading any further. I flicked through the book to see diagram examples but too little too late.
