Amazingly Excellento
Unc Mij very seldomly make reviews on Blue Note reissues because I have quite a few originals a lot of them being monos..One of my hobbies is comparing these reissues with either originals, good Liberty pressings, or sometimes Japanese versions..I have a wide range of genres I dig but I'm.a Blue Note Addict especially all things Grant Green and some Lee Morgans stuff..I love Lee Morgan best when him and Wayne Shorter were pkaying off each other ..Some Classic ish.. That said this album is probably my fave of his solo Blue Note outings..I have the original stereo and im excited abput the prospect of comparing the two over some Ginger wine abd a cigar...I've probably purchased 20 of these classics reissues if not more, along with selected Tone Poets..I brought this but only decided to play it last night on my new pioneer turntable that's still in testing stage bur on raw sound it was so amazing that I stayed up past my desired bedtime listening to it.mit helped me actually get some things done in my house that needed to.be done...It's one Indont ever see myself reselling it...I plan to do an update at some point of my detailed findings!!! Bravo!! Blam Blam!!

A Classic Wayne Shorter Quartet Date
A classic quartet date with Shorter joined by Herbie Hancock on piano, Reginald Workman on bass, and Joe Chambers on drums. The title track, which opens the album, is the mandatory, post-"Sidewinder" funky blues number. It feels like a bit of a throwaway, but Shorter and company tackle it gamely and manage to make it more interesting than many of these exercises were. Once it's out of the way, the remaining tunes raise the stakes considerably; they include four additional, much more substantial originals by Shorter, plus a lovely, atmospheric take on Jimmy Rowles's"502 Blues" (which, despite the title, isn't really a blues at all). The classic "Footprints," which opens side two, is of course the highlight, but the bossa-tinged "El Gaucho," the somewhat Coltrane-esque "Chief Crazy Horse," and especially the hauntingly beautiful "Teru" are all fine compositions in their own right, and all are handled brilliantly by all four musicians. The session was well recorded, apart from the fact that Workman's bass sounds a bit unnatural and rather distant. To my ears (and on my equipment), that's even truer on the Blue Note Classic vinyl reissue of this album than on the RVG Edition CD, though not by quite enough to make me sure I prefer the CD overall. The CD also includes a bonus track, Hancock's "The Collector." It's a fine piece, and well played, though not absolutely essential. This is one of those cases where I really wish Amazon allowed half-star ratings, as 4 stars doesn't seem quite sufficient, but 5 seems a little high given the slightly sub-optimal sound.

No Title on Spine
There is no title on the spine of this vinyl record, and it's thin (no gatefold). Ridiculous! Takes too long to find it in your collection. One extra star because, it's great music.

A classic for sure.... at a great price!
The Classic Series is an amazing deal in audiophile quality jazz pressings. They capture great performances and are always quiet and dynamic. I have yet to come across one that doesn't have the same quality as the Tone Poet series and I haven't had any pressing mistakes on any of them. They may not have the tip-on jackets of the Tone Poets, but that just means they take up less room. I'm buying them all!
