All 3 wires and the scissors came in a large resealable plastic bag. As soon as I opened the bag, I was hit with a very strong oil smell—what I assume is leftover residue from the machining process.Not knowing what chemicals were responsible for this smell, I definitely wanted to clean them since that wasn't done during manufacturing and I don't want mystery chemicals on my plants. I washed the wire bundles with Dawn dish soap, but the smell remained, so I left them to sit overnight in a bath of soapy water. If that doesn't eliminate the smell, I'll give it another shot with a stronger degreaser like Simple Green or mineral spirits.I can't speak to the efficacy of the products yet since I'm still working on getting them clean. Keep this in mind when deciding on this purchase—some people may not mind at all the very strong oil smell, or may not mind a little bit of cleaning before having to use the product. But if you order this, you'd better be okay with one or both of those prospects.I'll update the review once I've had the opportunity to use them, but wanted to go ahead and post this so others may know what to expect.UPDATE - upgrading from 2 to 3 stars. An overnight soak in soapy water completely eliminated the smell from the wires. This was my first experience using training wires, and they are pretty satisfying to use actually. They bend easily enough not to damage tender branches provided you do it with care, and they seem to hold shape once positioned. I've not used the scissors yet as I mainly needed the wire and thought the free scissors were a nice bonus. I did not soak those overnight since I didn't have an immediate need to use them. The followup message from the seller with the info that the smell is for rust prevention on the scissors is good to know, so I'm glad I didn't soak those.
