Artificial Lighting for Photography

Technically sufficient, but very poorly written
I don't doubt that the authors know their photographic stuff. Explanations, for the most part, get the point across. The example photos are helpful and illustrative of the discussed concepts. In the end, the book works. However, I am constantly distracted by the awkward phrasing and wording used by the authors, and by the confusing and sometimes incorrect illustrations. It feels like the writers are trying to be overly pompous. The error that compelled me to write this review is the use of the word "immolate" when the author(s) presumably meant "emulate." And not just once, but twice (that I've found):"The cumulative effect is that the photographer can use a less powerful flash setup that, with repeated flash bursts, can immolate a more powerful unit." (p.102)"... the model light immolates the direction and quality of the flash." (p. 124)In addition to the curious writing style and wording, some of the figures do not work. For example, Figure 3-19 (p.59) shows incident and reflected light rays at different angles - that's not how it works. Figures 3-18 and 3-19 only manage to confuse the concept they are meant to illustrate because they are technically incorrect. This first edition book would have benefitted greatly from the input of an experienced technical writer, and perhaps more importantly, a thorough editor. This is the first edition, so let's hope you have the option of a revised second edition. I continue to learn good stuff from this book, but I can only take it in small doses. If I see "immolate" used one more time, I may just have to immolate this particular book. Well, maybe just emulate immolation.

Brilliant book
The author is a expert in his field and has mastered the use of artificial lighting in a variety of uses. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to really master lighting.

Excellent Choice to Learn About Lighting
I was very impressed with this book. It certainly provided me with more useful information about lighting than any other source I've read. As another reviewer said, it is almost textbook-like but still very readable. That occasionally showed when the authors took several paragraphs to state the obvious but those bits were few and far between and can be easily skimmed. The main point, I think, is that anyone who reads this book will know almost all there is to know about lighting and will know it very well. Pricy but worth it.

pleased
I was very happy with the book's condition and overall appearance. The book was filled with interesting facts that have helped me grow as a photographer. I was a little annoyed with how long the book took to arrive but it showed up in one piece and so I was satisfied.

This is a really helpful book.
This is a really helpful book. I would say it is for someone that already knows a little bit about photography because of the vocabulary used but the diagrams and sample images are very helpful

Essential reading for studio lighting!
I only wish I had gotten my hands on this book a couple of years ago. It would have saved me some frustrating moments in trying to control lights on my subjects. It very clearly explains the fundamentals of studio lighting! I'm not even half way through the book and I've learned so much! Love the clean layout, too.
