Climate history in tree rings
I loved this book, In the past I was involved in Sclerochronology (study of growth rings in coral) and only vaguely knew about Dendrochronology (the study of tree rings). For that reason) This well written book was a real eye opener for me. Whereas we had been able to go back in time a little more than 400 years in Florida Keys head corals, I was amazed to learn that tree ring studies have taken us back in time to around 8,000 years. In our coral studies we learned about past changes in salinity/temperature including past atomic testing. However tree ring are reveling climate records for a far longer time period. But that is just part of the story. The book provides a much wider range of historical knowledge. The book is well written and an enjoyable look into the complex science of Dendrochronology. How to see people from a dendro perspective
The author does a great job of linking together diverse scientific studies with a plethora of historical correlations - very thoughtfully, and by telling stories that most of us can relate to. It was sad to hear more about Rapa Nui and Iceland - but it connected me to how much we humans depend on trees.Plus, I found a perfect example of the hockey stick story in Chapter 6. When I went to look at these reviews on Amazon, an anonymous "professor at an Ivy League University" demonstrated how to mudsling the science and the author. Blessings to the author for telling the stories despite knowing that the mud was coming, for it will take this kind of bravery if we're ever going to keep from chopping down that last tree on Easter Island.

Worth the money
Well written about a technology very few know about. Amazing what this science has discovered

Awesome book. Something in it for everyone
The breadth of knowledge that the author has obtained shows the incredible scope and contribution of this branch of science. Quite fascinating and beautifully written. It reads like a story as well as a science, geography, history and chemical course - but all presented without fuss. A truly well worth book that bears multiple dips after one has finished it. Highly recommended

Really well written. And fascinating
Author makes a highly technical science easily readable and totally fascinating. I thought it would only be interesting to people like me who've spent a career around trees, but I'd highly recommend it to anyone who has had to think through a compelling problem.

Very dense and scholarly.
Every page reads slowly because it is absolutely packed with science and history. Marvelous to learn how tree rings store information about climate, fires, hurricanes, earthquakes and more. And learn how things like picture frames and ancient sunken ships can be dated and join the great worldwide family of this science. This is the kind of book I've wanted for a long time. Worth twice the money.

Fascinating
Who knew the multitude of ways that tree rings can inform? Amazing in the scope of historical series that can be supplemented with tree ring data. Well written with great descriptions of the nuances of interpretation, and historical sketches of the contexts where applied. Lots of good illustrations as well. The involvement of other scientists are also acknowledged and described. Although I am sometimes cynical, how this book can be viewed as self-promotion is beyond me. It's a shame if that is how it is viewed: Missing out on a wonderful book and a disservice to the author.

An adventure through history and time
When you realize that the oldest living tree is more than 5000 years old and think about what it has witnessed you can only be amazed. That we can learn so much from its tree rings about past and future is an incredible valuable gift to us who are only briefly passing by in time on this shared planet.
