The history
It is at once the best combination of a scholarly literary and historical writing. Very picturusque and therefore horrifying too. A must read for those who wish to know about the blackest period of the Nazi regime. One cannot appreciate The Hero enough. . Great man, very adorable .

A most unusual and shocking book
Full factual account of a most remarkable man and the immense cruelty he and millions of Jews were subjected to. Surreal but real. Unbelievable but totally beyond refute. A reminder of quite how base human beings can be to each other. And that includes fellow inmates when subjected to extreme existential pressures, where personal survival depends upon rising above the pack. Unforgettable

A survivor who told uncomfortable truths
This is an important and quite wonderful book. The author recounts with great perspicacity and clarity the story of two young Jewish men that succeeded in escaping from Auschwitz and eventually warned the outside world as to the atrocities taking place there. One of the most moving and shocking parts of the account is how in numerous instances politicians in various countries failed to act on the information either through latent prejudice or collusion with the Nazis. In the decades following, Rudolf Vrba didn’t fit the stereotype of the Holocaust survivor and told uncomfortable truths that not everyone was ready or prepared to hear. I can’t recommend ‘The Escape Artist’ too highly; I read it shortly after visiting Auschwitz / Birkenau and it made an already powerfully moving experience still more vivid.
