Every Oil Painter’s Dream
I avoided purchasing one of these for a while now - mainly because it didn’t seem to be a necessity. My art instructor highly recommended it and offered to purchase from me if it wasn’t up to the hype. Win - win, right? The enclosed instructions suggested marking both the top lid and top base because, “the lid has a memory and won’t properly seal” if not. It also suggests adding a little petroleum jelly to ease in sealing the lid back onto the base. The enclosed instructions also recommend avoid exposing the paint preserving palette to cold temperatures, as “it will cause the plastic to become brittle and crack”. So, no tossing this into the freezer to preserve your oils. You leave this on the counter with an airtight seal, away from extreme temperatures.I was a bit surprised the lid is constructed of hard plastic and doesn’t have the flexibility of a rubberized lid. Looks like a rubberized lid would last longer, steal tighter, and be easier to seal. The lid is difficult to click onto the base, but is easier if you click the corners first then run your hand around the sides, burping it as you go.The base is sturdy and level. There are no rubberized feet on the bottom, so I’ll probably add some for added stability and grip.It does hold a tempered glass 12x16 palette with enough room around the edge of the base to lift with ease. 12x16 toss away palettes also fit perfectly. The “#1 in Service” white item in the photos isn’t a dust bag of sorts. It’s a cheap ol’ package of facial tissues. This was the most random thing I’ve seen tossed into a purchase. It made me chuckle.

Great box to store yopur pallete
I bought this to store my glass palete that I use for oil paintings,is a very good box,it will keep your oils clean and usable for a week in normal conditions but some people say that you can extend that time with some hacks. The hatch is not easy to actually close and I fear for it being broken, but so far it still stands

Overall a great palette
I bought this painting palette for a college-level art class a few semesters ago, and I genuinely didn’t think I would use it that much. For the longest time in the past, I would always just use the cheap plastic palettes you would give to a kid for finger painting and preschool art classes, so that’s what I was used to for painting palettes. However, ever since I got this painting palette I have realized just how much better a more professional painting palette like this one is compared to the others. This palette is better for transportation, keeping paints from drying out, and even mixing paints. In the past, I wasn’t able to move any paints from place to place after they were out of the bottle. If I had some specific colors mixed while at an art class and wanted to take the palette home without losing those colors, I just couldn’t. I would always have to clean off the palette so the paint wouldn’t smear on anything. Thanks to the lid on this palette, however, I’m able to transfer paints to and from class without worrying about it spilling. The lid is airtight, so, the more you use it, the more you’ll get hit with a strong smell of chemicals when you open it, but if you paint a lot, odds are you’re used to that.I use acrylic-based paints as opposed to oil-based paints for a variety of reasons, and a big problem I have is how quickly they can dry out. With this palette, you can just wet the palette paper and the paints will stay wet for much longer, I’ve found mine can last for up to a week with the lid on. This palette is also big, which allows for a lot more room to mix and test colors for whatever project you’re working on. You can also easily switch out the palette paper without having to wash the whole palette, which makes things like mixing even easier. This palette isn’t without its faults, however. Given its size, it may make transporting your paints easy, but you need a decently sized bag to carry the actual palette. The lid can also at times be difficult to pull off. The biggest gripe I have with this palette however is its grip, or lack thereof. The palette is essentially just a shallow box, it has no place specifically meant to be held, and thus it can get a bit awkward to hold. I often times have to leave it resting on a table if I'm standing, or on my lap if sitting, which can make working with it annoying at times. The palette does come with a package of palette paper depending on what bundle you get, which you need to be able to use the palette effectively, but you will eventually run out. This means you’ll have to buy more, which can also be a bit annoying since you need the palette paper to actually use the palette itself. These gripes however aren’t nearly enough to outweigh the benefits of this palette, and I would recommend this product to anyone who wants to start painting as a serious hobby.

There is a solutions for the rigid base...
The base has a high center. If you use a rigid palette for mixing colors, you will not be able to have a flat bottom for stability Straight Out of the Box. The solution, set it in the sun on a hot day with a weight in the center. It will heat the plastic up and the weight will reduce or remove the high spot in one day. I left the weight on the base over night when it cooled down to "fix" the correct shape. I used a 10lb dumbell on end. The dumbell is solid with flat or nearly flat end. I tried a 5lb but it was too light.About the top, I set in in the sun also just to make sure the sealing edges were payable enough. This step is not necessary. It was just a quirk I have.🏅Good luck and have fun painting.

Disappointed
I noticed it was not built for being air tight immediately I received it. It does not have a seal in the lid that makes the box to be airtight. A seal ring is a must because it is seal that keeps keep air out when is closed. Wanted to return it immediately but I decided to give it try. As an experiment I put my palette in the box that has a few blobs oil paint as well as a few thin layers of mixed colors. In a week, skin layers were form on the big blobs of paints, just as they would if you just leave them in the open air. The thin layers completed dried and I had to use knife to scrape very hard get rid of them. In addition It is very difficult to peel off the lid so is putting it back. Very regretted to buy it. Should’ve returned without second thought. Any cheap plastic containers would do just as as fine as this product does. To sum it up it does not keep your paint dry you as you expect it to do. Not worth the money.

Works but over priced.
This is a cheap flimsy plastic box, that's all it is. No pallette sponge, no paper, comes with a small pack of tissues..... Not worth the price. For the price it should come with the sponge and paper, I shouldn't have to buy additional items to use it at the price point.

Makes an excellent seal!
I am using this for oil painting, and I must say it works as advertised. I pressed the lid on with a good amount of oil paints inside, and 2 weeks later when I came to finish my painting, the oils were still workable and behaved as though they were just squeezed out that same day! Masterson never fails to come through with good products.
