Satie -- Gymnopedies & Gnossiennes (Alfred Masterwork Edition)

My son’s piano teacher recommended this specific arrangement for his recital piece. He has been doing great with it. I like the info it gives about the composer. It also has great performance suggestions for the pieces and the clearly marked notations are helping my son get this piece down well (his amazing piano teacher is also helping with that). The spacing on the piece is nice and makes the notes easy to read well. Overall an excellent product I believe!

The quality of the sheet music itself on kindle is poor, so much so that even though I’m familiar with the pieces, I can’t play from this kindle edition. However, there are extensive notes in the first few pages about how to play them, what they looked like in first published editions, etc.So, I recommend this edition HIGHLY, but get it on paper, not kindle. (I returned my kindle edition for refund.)

Of course it is a good book, but for at least 2 of the pieces, including Gymnopedie # 1, I printed it out elsewhere. It suggests splitting some chords between the hands, and looks a heck of a lot more complicated than the music really is. Other pieces are ok.. I also had to print out Gnossienne #1, I found the lack of bar lines very confusing,. there is a meter, Satie could have just said "play feely," Whatever ha.

Overall, this book is quite good. It includes Satie's original hand-written scores which are super cool to peruse. The quality of the book and the sheet music itself is top notch.My issue is that a few liberties have been taken with the pieces. For example, in Gymnopedies 1, the sheet music describes using your right hand where a left-hand stride-esque approach should be taken. No doubt this is for ease of play, but it detracts from the original work. All in all, 4/5, just look at the included sheet music to see how Satie's take differs from the person who wrote the book

The product was an exceptional buy and in excellent condition . As for the delivery they surprised me by delivering the package only 14 hours after I order it - great job !

Performance notes and Satie’s biopic are very interesting to read.However the notation of right/left hand parts is incredibly confusing. The fingerings also seem a bit off. Visually the staffs are very odd looking.There has to be better versions of these sheet music.

This edition's fingering and pedaling suggestions are incredibly helpful. It's clear when the RH plays bass notes and the LH plays treble notes, and I like that the editor provides suggestions for when una corda or tre corda may be appropriate. Additionally, there is background information and a section called "Suggestions for Performance" in the beginning of the book. The information is invaluable for proper interpretation of Satie's works. Any serious pianist will want to read that information before delving into the music. I have other editions of Trois Gymnopedies, and this one is by far the best.Also, there is a copy of Satie's original manuscript in the back of the book. A fun piece of music history to check out!

Nice copy with clear fingering between hands for chording, which is very helpful. There is also a bonus of an interesting picture of his original copies in own handwriting and interesting bio information about Satie himself.

I played Gymnopedie 1 from a different score before. By comparison this one is awful. Really poorly edited. Real pain to play from. You will be better off going to IMSLP and getting a selection of free versions to choose from instead.

Although this music can be downloaded for free on the internet, I decided to buy it as it was such a good price. I'm happy I did because the book is bigger than A4 making it much clearer. It's also preferable to have it nicely bound rather than loose pages.

Clearly laid out music, so easy on one's eyesight.
