Q: Are these terrycloth? I want to use them to decorate for a baby shower, but terry would be tough to draw/stencil on.

I did machine embroidery and they were nice. Hand embroidery, fabric appliqués, or fabric paint would work.

Q: Are these pullover bibs or do they need fastened?

they snap in the back, Not an over your head bib on the small side but our guy is big anyways.

Q: are these water proof? plastic on back?

No. They are great, cute bibs but they are more of a terry cloth material. They get damp, but they eventually dry. I bought a bunch and use about 3 a day so I don't have to keep wet ones on her for long.
