The book is a collection of smaller Osprey published books. It giving a good overview of the SS. It traces the details of the Allgemeine SS (General SS) from 1923, as Hitler's bodyguard, and includes the fateful date of 6 January 1929 when Heinrich Himmler was appointed commander of the fledgling SS. It cover the rise and fall of the SA and the emergence of the SS as an independent branch after the purge of the SA in the "Night of the Long Knives".From there the book covers the Nazi Police State; The Waffen-SS (Armed SS); The early years of World War II which were full of victory; then the "turning fortunes" and includes information of its foreign members; and ends with the destruction of the SS at the end of the war. Its weapons, tactics and war crimes are all covered. It makes a good reference guide for the different SS sections, including, as I said the Waffen-SS; history, insignia, and uniforms. 300+ pages of text, illustrations, maps and photographs.
