Some Pleasant Listening From One Hit Wonder CLOUT
SUBSTITUTE was a huge International hit for the South African band Clout in 1978 and although it didn’t really make a big dent in the US charts, it peaked at #2 here locally in Canada a few weeks before Christmas. It has all but disappeared since then and I’ve never heard it on retro radio even though I can’t figure out why. I’ve always loved it and that’s why I bought this CD despite not knowing any of their other songs. The rest of the CD is a mixed bag. The first five songs are great before it gets bogged down with a few mediocre ones before things get good again. Clout’s sound is like a hybrid of ABBA and Fleetwood Mac; late 1970s Corporate Rock mixed with Europop but for the most part it works. SAVE ME, UNDER FIRE, DON’T STOP, WHEN WILL YOU BE MINE and ALL OF ME are all catchy with strong lyrics; A THREAT AND A PROMISE and WITHOUT LOVE are quite musically ambitious and even a cover of April Wine’s OOWATANITE comes off better than expected.A good collection of a forgotten band with only a few skippable tracks. Comes with a booklet with extensive liner notes in a glossy cardboard case. FOUR STARS.

Too heavy on the Bass - for 'Substitute'
Substitute is a great track and I've watched a video clip of it so often I thought I ought to buy the CD. Well I haven't played the CD through properly yet but 'Substitute' is very heavy on the bass to the extent where the track is pretty much ruined for me. I'll be checking out other CDs with this track on to see if I can find a better version. As for the rest of the album, I'm guessing it will be likewise too heavy on the bass.

UNDER -RATED IN BRITAIN.
My first ever album by Clout and my first ever by a South African act.I only knew a couple of their songs. There are a few mediocre songs on this 20 song compilation, but the large majority are very good. 'Save Me' is a personal favourite.
