Great concept- poorly executed.
This activity was so fun! However when it comes down to it there are a few things I was unable to overlook resulting in only 3 stars. Before we even began digging we read the accompanying story page. The errors were awful! I could overlook run on sentences but not the abundance of grammatical and spelling issues. I am uncertain if things were lost in translation but I cannot believe no one bothered to proof read the story page for spelling errors. This activity is geared for young children who are just learning the proper usage of words. I would not be ok gifting this to a child due to the amount of errors. Now for the digging portion… Digging up the treasures was both fun and messy!!! One thing we found annoying is that a few of the charms were broken even prior to them being uncovered. As an example my daughter dug out half of a bow and minutes later located the other half in another area of the dig. That was the second red flag for me. They actually concealed broken treasures. It’s one thing if my daughter broke something while excavating but she did not, they actually buried it that way!!!

Messy fun
I have a couple of girls who love all things unicorn, so they were really excited to get this one. When we opened it up it was pretty dusty, like some of it had started to crumble a little bit. Fortunately, it was wrapped in plastic inside of the box so it did not make a mess. I was able to open it over the trash and shake off the extra dust with no problem. it was just a tiny bit of the edge that had crumbled, so nothing that ruined our fun in any way. We followed the instructions and soaked the whole block for 15 minutes then started digging in! I set it on a baking pan to catch the mess, instead of the tablecloth they suggested, and that worked out well. It sure did make a mess too! There were big goopy piles of wet clay all over that tray and the kids absolutely loved it. They had no problems digging out all of the gems, though the hammer did break during the dig. They actually found the broken handle to work better than the hammer did anyway, so they were happy with that. At the end they counted all of their gems and had all 14, but one was a weird bead looking thing. I had them match them up to the story page that came with it and they decided they must have accidentally gotten the weird bead thing instead of the star gem. It was kind of a bummer, but they are flexible, so not a big deal. I gathered up the mess and tossed it into a bag to throw away and they suddenly realized it wasn't a weird bead thing- it was the broken hammer. We tried digging through the pile of clay that had already been bagged up to see if we could find the star, but we were not successful. It is possible we were missing one gem, or that we just somehow lost it in that mess. I can't really say for certain which scenario is correct. The gems that we did find were cute and they were all in good shape. I like that this came with a little story page about each gem, but it was a difficult read. However, you can use this as a great learning opportunity; find and correct as many grammatical and spelling errors as you can. It is a valuable lesson to know that things do not always translate perfectly. Overall, I think that this was a really fun activity and that it would make a great gift.

Definitely NOT for a 5 or 6 year old
Absolutely would not recommend for a child 5-8. The thing is still not all chiseled away and my daughter has completely lost all interest in it. Got it for her for Christmas and after it took her about 8 hours to get maybe 10% chiseled away, she threw it and has had nothing else to do with it. When it was threw, it didn’t even crack or break. For an adult in my opinion and that’s being kind. Just throw the wood chisels and hammer away and get a flathead screwdriver and real hammer and go to town with it. I’d recommend just spending the extra money on the discovery ones and save the headache. Debating on soaking this one in water and hope it doesn’t turn to concrete.

Fun
This is fun toy for your explorer. They can actually dig for treasures from their room. My granddaughter loved this toy. She had a great time finding her treasures. This would make a great gift.

Awful item
Would leave zero stars if I could. Instructions say to soak 5-10mins to soften. We have now soaked it for over an hour total, still can’t hammer through the rock. Toys we have found are broken. What a waste of money and a disappointment for my 4 year old.
