The Mammoth Book of Chess
A**.
For more experienced players In my opinion.
Rapid delivery good service. But wow!!! this book is heavy going & very comprehensive. I can play chess but not to a high standard so I wanted to improve my game but this is way above me. I understand the notations & a lot of what is said but some of the strategies are way beyond me at this stage. Maybe I should buy a more basic book & spend more time on my chess computer & then move onto this book when I'm more competent.

Very much a must have book.
This is a great book for anyone who plays chess, is starting to play chess or is thinking about starting to play chess. It really does cover every topic you need to know about in chess, and it written in a knowledgable and engaging style!Myself, just getting back into playing chess after playing on and off in my youth, and then not having touched the game for a long time. This book has great coverage on tactics, and then moves very nicely from general topics to more specifics about the openings.

Ultimate guide for players of all standards
I really enjoyed this book because it was informative and engaging. It's amazing to see how well Burgess summarises chess events and the progression of the board game throughout history. He explain everything thoroughly, yet concisely. Almost every aspect of chess is covered, from endgame study to puzzles, computer chess and openings (it also includes a glossary of every chess term I can think of!), and a nice balance of wit, humour and information, blended with the superb content that you'll find in here, I guarantee this will satiate your hunger for chess literature. Definitive and practical, The Mammoth Book of Chess will entertain and polish your chess; it is the ultimate guide!Would definitely recommend!!

A Treasuretrove of information here
I am a new player but John Nunn recommends this book in his suggested reading at the end of his beginners book "Learn Chess". I think this is an excellent tip A player such as myself would probably struggle to fully digest all the concert in this book at the present time. However with practice and study the areas covered will begin to make sense and then this book becomes a ready reference for the chess player that covers every aspect of the game. I know that as I have played more, I have particularly been drawn to the sections on tactics and openings. To me the book then is really a no brainer for anyone who is serious or becoming serious about chess especially considering its very reasonable price.
