Best tool of its kind for the money, AND the construction. Period!
7 1/2 x 1/2"...... If you are worried about the construction of this tool or the strength, dont. I bought this tool to perform a lawn test from our St. Augustine grass here in Florida where the soil is both sandy and full of clay. On the day I decided to do the soil test it rained. THIS was the key to my success. Using a small rubber mallet I gently tapped the tool into the ground with very little resistence over 30 times.....not even close to twisting or bending this lil savior of a tool. Made very well. Things to consider....dont be a caveman and just jam it into dry soil and expect it to "glide" through like a hot knife thru butter. Use common sense. If the ground is dry, wet it a lil and you will have no issues as I did. So much better and easier on the lawn than using a shovel trying to gather soil samples from all over the yard. This one will last you a life time if you treat it with respect and understand that even the toughest tool will break if used incorrectly. I searched for days and am glad I did as I came across this version of an otherwise very simple and basic tool. I cant say enough good things about it. If you are just taking soil samples from your lawn, this size may be all you need rather than the larger one. Maybe save a few dollars because you really dont need any sort of He-Man leverage to properly use this tool.:)

Sturdy and worked well
Got this product to soil test my hayfields. Tried doing it with a shovel but the clay soil was too gummy when wet and hard as a rock when dry. The soil sampler is well made and worked well. Some spots were pretty dry forcing me to put my full 200 lbs on it and it handled it OK. Better to spend a little more for this unit and have something that looks like it is going to last for a good while. Took 50-60 samples with no problems.

Quality Sampler for Home Lawn Use
Bought this to use on my lawn in SE Texas which is mostly heavy clay and in some spots sandy soil conditions. I use this for 3 main reasons. 1) To collect soil samples at proper depths. 2) To check water penetration after watering my lawn. 3) To check soil profile. This sampler is simple and of good quality. I've never had a problem while taking samples, even is some heavily compacted areas. So far, I haven't had an issue with the soil sticking to it either. I think the polished finish helps with that.Time will tell how well it will hold up. I don't see me wearing this thing out any time soon since I will probably use it for less than 50 samples a year.

Soil sample probe
Used the item to take 15 soil samples around my lawn to get a soil report. At sample 10, the metal shaft started to twist and bend. The soil is mainly clay, so it was a bit hard to work with, but care was taken when taking samples. This item is not very sturdy, and while I got all 15 samples, is soft and basically throw away. I would look elsewhere.

Great for my residential lawn
I used this tool to pull soil samples from my residential lawn. I wasn't looking forward to spending over $100 for a probe so I could run a $25 test, and was happy I found this one. It worked great, and was so much simpler than trying to use a trowel. With moist ground, I had a bit of trouble removing the soil from the tip as it was packed in, but came up with a solution. I grabbed my socket set, and found a deep socket that fit perfectly (14mm, I believe). I installed it backwards on a 6" socket extension, and that created a tight fitting push rod that allowed me to free the packed soil from the tip, cleanly break off the 2" that I wanted to test, and put the remainder of the plug back in the hole.I can't vouch for this in rocky or dry soil, but for a residential lawn I was happy.

Works great for a decent price
I have a terrible lawn. The soil is as fertile as a block of salt, and I needed to get some good samples to send to a lab. I've tried using a hand shovel in the past, and it was annoying, and required a bit of work to get a decent sample from 4-6" deep. This little sampler not only cuts right down (with a little wiggling and pushing), it pulls the soil out so you can see the layers in the viewing window.I wish the tube were maybe 3" longer (just so I can see even deeper into my soil), but this works for all the sampling I'll ever need to do, and will likely outlast me (as long as I don't leave it in the rain!).

Use caution in this product selection...
This product is well made of stainless steel, and is a very simple tool to use. However, if you're planning to sample hard packed, remote, seldom-tilled areas for food plots, as I was, it is useless. I couldn't insert it more than an inch in the ground without risking breaking it in my food plot areas, and they had been deep-plowed and disked the year before. For my use I'd give it a one-star, since it was totally ineffective in sampling my soil. However, as I said, it is handy and well made, and for tilled garden soil I'm sure it would do a fine job of sampling, so I'd give it a five. Just be sure of what you plan on sampling before you invest in this tool.

Very solidly built
Did the job! Very solidly built and was able to dig pretty deep. I'm a 230 lb dude, and some of the areas of my lawn where I was trying to extract sample are EXTREMELY rock hard. I literally put my full weight on top of this to try to get it as deep as possible and at no time did I feel any weakness. Could be said that it is a little bit of a pricey tool if you're only going to sample a regular homeowner's lawn once a year, but I imagine this will be in my tool shed for the life of us living in our home (I'm 30). Good buy, great construction.
